Squirrel!!
It is unseasonably warm here today and as I was getting my tea earlier I noticed that there were 9 (!) squirrels playing in my yard. I had a lovely break watching them enjoy the day and it was such a nice, calming moment. Even in the colder months it is important to remember to connect with nature every day.

@Jill Hart Well, it was still a distraction, but a calm one!
Just saying hi after a long day
Today was a bit of a rough go - I got interviewed about my book and apparently it was one of those podcasts whose vibe is proving how smart they are by trying to trip up their guests with "gotcha" moments. They were not successful, but it was such an ick feeling. Hence, my return to community here in the folkloring way - some people might be jerks, but having a place to talk spirituality and folklore with sincere people is a balm to my spirit. I am glad to gather here around our virtual fire and share stories, my friends.

@Jill Hart Some people just want to be in power and are not feeling empathy. It is not my way, but I see that behavior and will not let it hurt me. I did walk away from the interview sweaty and upset, so maybe my shields were not good enough for toxicity today!
Protecting your energy
What are some of the things you do to protect your energy I have a very specific grounding and shielding ritual that I do regularly, but I also find that limiting the exposure I have with people that have values that do not align with mine is probably the biggest action I take. This is on my mind because I recently reached out to a person I had become acquainted with to ask if he supported some ongoing current events that I definitely do not support. Which he did - and so I politely told him that I was not interested in a connection. Didn't call him out, explain my position or try to talk reason with him, just cut off my energy. Sometimes it is the mundane actions that are the most magickal.

@Simone Charlton I think regular grounding and shielding it key. I do it daily and before I go out and will be around people. I also do it when I run across someone that has an energy that makes me feel off. There are any number of visualizations that you can use to ground and shield, but essentially you are connecting to the earth's vibration and putting up a filter around yourself that does not allow negative energy in. It can be debated whether this is just using symbolism or if you are affecting the energy within and around you, but either way, it works!

@Simone Charlton There are a variety of ways to do it and I think ultimately experimenting a bit will land you on the one that is right for you. Here are a couple of good basic instructions of methods: https://www.learnreligions.com/grounding-centering-and-shielding-4122187 https://priestessofaphrodite.com/2020/02/29/why-do-we-ground-cleanse-and-shield/ The method I use is something I learned in a class and have modified since to suit my purposes.
This week's folkloring
For those of you who haven't heard my podcast, I start every episode with a quick example of how I have been folkloring lately. I interviewed three people this week, so I had to identify a lot of folkloring. One of the examples I used was Skool - because building community is Folkloring. I am so glad to be here and I have been feeling a bit of overwhelm lately with my book release gearing up and having to do all the things, so I have been a bit quiet here. Then I remembered - I LOVE talking about folklore and magick and this group is the fun part where I get to do just that! Thanks to all for being here (and many thanks to @Jill Hart who dragged me in here in the first place)! How have you been folkloring lately?

@Jill Hart That's some serious folkloring and magick making! Yay for parking magick and banishing spells. Remind your daughter to do some cord cutting (quantum entanglement approved cord cutting, obvs)
Spirits
Let's talk ghosts! Do you believe in them? Why do we find stories about spirits from every culture around the world? Do you think spirits of the deceased are different than other kinds of spirits? Have you ever had a ghostly encounter? What was THAT like? Why are so many ghosts Victorian and not from more modern times? Why do you think some places are more "haunted" than others? I have my thoughts on all these topics, but want to hear yours first!

@Brandie Robbins I think it is so interesting when we start to look at magickal thinking that is socially acceptable vs. magickal thinking that is not. I agree that awareness and openness is the best path to allowing magick in your life!

Do I think ghosts are real - I absolutely do since I have encountered them myself. Do I think we can prove it? Not yet, but I am hopeful that we will at some point. I think the science to watch here is the study of consciousness. We can't prove that spirits exists as conscious beings after death until we actually understand what consciousness actually IS, which we do not at this time. I don't think that we will automatically be able to prove that ghosts exist once we understand that, but I think it is the next step in our understanding along that path. I agree with @Maria Bello that traumatic deaths and places with high mortality rates will naturally have more activity. I guess the thing I am wondering about now is why some ghosts linger and some move on - it can't all be traumatic passing.
