Hi! I'm Rufo and I'm an actor and a poet. I was born in the UK, lived in the US for several years and am now based in France. I've taught creative writing at NYU Paris and published a dozen books of poetry. We want to let you in on something, because it comes straight from the people who actually make the decisions. Every casting director Claire has worked with, and every one we have spoken to since, watches self-tapes from the same angle. And it is not the one most actors are pouring their energy into. They are not really watching how you deliver. They are watching how you listen. The reaction is where the job is won. The pause. The thought that moves through you while the other person is still speaking. The half-second before you answer. That is the part you cannot fake, and it is the part casting leans in for, because it is the proof that you are actually in the scene and not just reciting it well. So the next time you set up a tape, stop rehearsing your delivery and start living in the listening. Track the thought. Let it land on you before you respond. Do not push it anywhere. Play the thought, and trust the camera to catch it. The lens reads what you are genuinely thinking long before it reads what you are trying to show. That is the difference between a tape that is technically good and a tape casting remembers. Here is one that has always stayed with me. Watch Kelly Reilly in Yellowstone in the moments she is not speaking. She can sit dead still, say nothing, and you can see the whole storm going on behind her eyes. She is not showing you anything. She is thinking it, and she trusts the camera to catch it. That is the entire lesson in one look. The truth is in the listening. She never tries to show it to you. She just thinks it, and lets us come to her. Now we want to hear yours. When was the last time a reaction, and not a line, stayed with you from something you watched? This week’s AI update is a particularly interesting one for actors. A major gathering has just taken place here in France at The Lumière Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, bringing together governments, filmmakers, actors, producers, studio heads and industry organisations from around the world. And AI was right at the centre of the conversation. What I find encouraging is that we seem to be moving beyond the rather exhausting “AI good / AI bad” argument. The conversation is becoming much more practical: AI is here. How do we use it without losing the human beings, human creativity and human performances our industry is built on? Here are the stories I think are worth your time this week. 🎭 1. A MAJOR NEW PRINCIPLE: HUMAN CREATION MUST REMAIN AT THE HEART OF FILM At the Lumière Summit on 7 September, representatives from across the international screen industry adopted the Lumière Declaration on the Future of Cinema and the Moving Image. And there is one line in it that really matters. The declaration acknowledges that AI can strengthen creativity, innovation and the circulation of work —while making it equally clear that human creation should remain at the heart and foundation of that work. For me, that's the balance. Use the technology. Learn what it can do. Let it help where it genuinely helps. But AI stays in its lane. The performance, the imagination, the storytelling and the creative choices still begin with human beings. 👉 Read the official Lumière Declaration: Lumière Declaration — Élysée Palace 🛡️ 2. MUCH MORE IMPORTANT FOR ACTORS: VOICE, LIKENESS, CONSENT AND PAYMENT Alongside the wider Lumière Declaration came a separate Saint-Paul-de-Vence Declaration on Artificial Intelligence. This gets much more specific. The principles include greater transparency around what material is used to train AI, identifying AI-generated or AI-altered content, and giving rights holders ways of knowing when their work has been used.
