I was stationed on Okinawa as a young man back in the late 1970's for two years, and acquired a modest ability in Japanese back then....but after getting out of the US military, I didn't get 'back' to it until I took a couple of "Technical Japanese" graduate level courses from the University of Wisconsin in the 1996 timeframe--and then got 'away' from Japanese once again!. But I am retired now, and have more free time to pursue my Japanese studies again. My wife and I made a trip BACK to Okinawa last April (2025, and spent some time in Osaka, too) and wish to make more trips in the future.
