Introduction
Morning guys! I am posting in from the state of Georgia and wanted to introduce myself. About a year and a half ago, I decided to leave a PM position at an energy services company to step into the field. I joined my brother in laws commercial electrical company to learn the trade but also help with bidding, business development and project management. Excited to see what I can learn from y'all!

Updates
How is everyone doing? Give us an update on your business as we approach the end of summer! I'll go first - 2026 was a difficult year for us. We were EXTREMELY slow for most of the year. Finances took a huge hit and it's very tight right now. We shifted our bidding focus around a little bit this summer and finally we were able to start landing jobs again. We have $1.1million lined up thru April! A huge restaurant, a job for the military, a large office space remodel, and some commercial shell buildings. Software
Hey all! I'm in the beginning stages of planning my company. I want to start it on the side while I continue to work for my current employer. One thing I'm trying to figure out is what kind of software everyone's using. So for all your systems, what's everyone running? For estimating, project management, invoicing, bookkeeping, accounting etc? Also include if your focus is more on commercial, residential, industrial. I want to focus on commercial but may do residential in between projects Thanks in advance!

We have used QuickBooks since day 1. I like it a lot, but it has a learning curve. QB does our time tracking, bookkeeping, payroll, etc. We use an old product that Trimble now owns called Estimations Desktop. It’s ancient but gets the job done. The big ones I hear about are McCormick and Trimble Accubid. I have no experience with either though. Procore is the biggest project management software around it seems. I paid for it for a year for internal use. It has a steep learning curve and in my opinion is far more suited to GC’s rather than subs. If you go that route I would say you almost certainly need a full time project manager to justify Procore.

Change orders
We recently completed a custom home project, I verbally told the customer there will be “extras” for all the changes, and they agreed “verbally “ I sent them a bill for 8k and they are crying about it and questioning everything we have done. Great Point- DONT BE AFRAID- write it out and BILL RIGHT AWAY!

Your Time - Making the Jump
I have been adding more videos and resources to the "Electrical Contractor Basics" course. Here is one of the videos I posted just recently. What are your thoughts on this topic. Many of you will probably have better insight on actually making the jump into your own business than I will (since my dad started it and I am taking it over 20 years later). What are your thoughts?
