Help with this scenario
I'm meeting with a coach about to start his first hc job. Here is one of his questions for me: Getting the buy-in from players and families - the former coach attempted to have players work out 4 days a week in the summer last year, but had to cancel due to competing with summer baseball. Only 8 players showed up. I do plan on implementing Arena OVR and rewarding attendance. **What would you say to him?**

I would make sure to find out what the summer baseball schedule is and see how he can partner with or work around that schedule. He needs to make sure and under promise and over deliver early. Be super consistent, show up to his players events (summer baseball games), stay positive and encouaraging!
Dan Campbell's Response Is Everything...
From a Coaches Outreach Bible study: When things weren’t going well in Detroit, Dan Campbell was asked about the pressure on him. He shut it down fast: “I don’t care about me… I care about those guys in that locker room.” Most leaders worry about: - Their job - Their reputation - Their future Real leaders worry about their people. Be honest—Would your team say that about you?

I love the Coaches Outreach Bible studies. Great stuff. I hope that my team would say this about me, but it is my job to daily walk this walk.
Build the Machine #5 ⚡ The Role Sheet Solves Storms Before They Hit
I’ll never forget this. Playoff loss. Tough one. After the game, a dad comes down… and lets me have it. “My son should’ve been playing.” And in his mind… he was right. That’s when it hit me: We had a communication problem, not just a football problem. That moment is what led me to creating the Role Sheet. Twice a year, every player gets it. It answers: - Where do I stand? - What is my role? - What do I need to do to move up? No guessing. No confusion. Because here’s the truth: 👉 Most “storms” in a program aren’t surprises 👉 They’re just unspoken expectations And when those expectations finally show up… 💥 They show up as: - Frustrated parents - Confused players - Locker room tension - “He should be playing” conversations The Role Sheet doesn’t eliminate hard conversations… 👉 It moves them earlier 👉 It makes them clearer 👉 It builds trust instead of tension We’re talking about this TODAY on the podcast: 🎙️ The 11 Storms That Are Coming This Fall This is one of them. And the Role Sheet is one of the simplest ways to solve multiple storms before they ever hit. 💬 Question: Do your players truly know their role right now? Or are you hoping they figure it out?

Coach, did you meet individually with each players and go over the form with them?
You Make the Call - Assistant Interviewing at Opponent Program
YOU MAKE THE CALL 🧠 Your assistant coach, in fact, not just an assistant, but your DC, is interviewing for the DC job… At a school in your conference. Same league. Same opponents. You may be lining up against him on Friday nights. Do you: A) Support him fully and help him prepare B) Stay neutral and let him handle it on his own C) Protect your program and limit what he’s involved in D) Something else? There’s loyalty. There’s opportunity. There’s your program. No perfect answer here. 👉 What are you doing? Drop your response and why.

This is very challenging but I feel as though lots of conversations would have to happen on why he was interviewing. I would vacillate between A and B I would think. I would also be curious as to what my relationship is with this coach. That would influence my decision some as well.
Every coach had that one line… 😂
You know the one—Said it every single day…Didn’t always make sense…But somehow you’ll never forget it. Our OL coach at ULM, JB Grimes, used to say at least twice a day: “I’m not going to piss on your leg and tell you're sweating.” We didn’t fully understand it at the time…But we knew it meant business. 😆 👇 Drop yours below—Best coach phrases you’ve heard (or STILL say today) Let’s build the ultimate list. I’ll start collecting the best ones and turn it into a graphic for the community.

Had a dear coach on mine decades ago always say, "Good God Effie, what will the harvest be?" any time we were struggling at practice! I still remember him saying it and it has been almost 35 years!
