@Paul Epstein , this is just a screenshot. I do not share unlisted videos here, as the Jazz Violin Academy is not private. People with a career in music may not wish to be exposed. Nevertheless it is important to show that the "Fiddle Jam" on Monday morning is alive.
Message to all the violinists who want to learn jazz
🇺🇸Message to all violinists who want to learn jazz... 🎻 It's true, I always encourage keeping things simple and swinging with 3 notes, while being uncompromising about rhythmic placement... but those 3 notes also need to sound in tune and with a good tone! I'd love for you to be just as uncompromising about tone and intonation. I probably don't say it enough... For me it goes without saying, because I studied classical for years, all day long, with a real obsession for intonation. So yes, I've since specialized in a different kind of teaching — improvisation... but that doesn't mean this side of playing should be neglected. It's VERY important! I believe everyone can always improve their technique, always in the service of the music, of course.

Of course, being comfortable with the instrument is important and that is what technique is good for.
Learning a new tune
How do you go about learning a new tune on your own? Do you read first, listen first, arpeggiate first? impro first? What would be the best way?

It depends, one needs to contextualize to answer this question. When I know the style and its notation conventions I would go straight to the score, in particular for ensemble playing where precision is required. Only in a later stage I double check listening to recordings if I run into something bizarre. If I am not too familiar with the style it will be difficult to form a good mental image from reading the score. In that case I listen first. Much will depend on the sight reading skills of the musician. Poor readers do not even have a choice but listen. The melody is probably most important, as harmonisations may vary. Arpeggios come into play only when committing to a sequence of chord changes.
REAL IMPROVISATION: IS IT POSSIBLE?

Improvising is not difficult but for some people it seems to be scary like public speaking. In other words it takes guts. One has to dare. In essence, improvising is using what you have available or at least a part of that. Reducing choices can make it easier. Someone said I cannot improvise over such complex changes. It turned out with nothing but the notes of the G minor pentatonic he was able to make a beautiful solo over the entire tune. Less can be more!
