Veterans Benefits versus SSDI or SSI
As a certified benefits planner we don’t get much training around VA benefits and I’ve been getting a lot of questions about this recently. So far from what I’ve researched you can receive both VA benefits as well as SSDI or SSI. It appears that SSI can be impacted by the amount of VA benefits received but not SSDI. The VA benefits do not appear to be impacted by the SSI or SSDI amounts. Here is a link to an SSA document comparing eligibility requirements for VA benefits and SSDI: https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-64-125.pdf

@Steve Stover it will be a pretty quick overview of both programs (mainly for those very new to it all) so may not be as in depth as you would be ready for as a professional but I’d love to have you there. Did you register already?

Introducing Myself
I’m a 100% P&T (permanent & total) disabled veteran that was recently put on SSDI. I’ve done a lot of veteran advocacy work over the years and SSDI is new to me. I applied and was approved in eight weeks. Record setting speed! I’d like to learn as much as I can to help myself and other veterans.

@Christi Tedder no you don’t have to file for it. If you haven’t worked since you applied for SSDI then you should have all nine months automatically available. But you can request a benefits planning query (BPQY) from SSA to make sure.
