Generative Engine Optimization
I am working on a project where I am optimizing specifically for GEO AKA Generative Engine Optimization. While ranking well in organic search results generally increases your chances of appearing in generative engine results, research shows that 30% of the sources that generative engines pull may not even rank in the top 10 organic results. In my personal experience, I've observed this phenomenon with one of my clients. Their website ranks #1 or #2 in organic search but doesn't appear in generative engine results. Based on the research, this isn't unusual since generative engines use different evaluation criteria than traditional search engines. My hypothesis, is that both content presentation and authority play significant roles in generative engine visibility. My client's site has a DR of only 30, while competing sites that appear in generative engine results have higher domain authority, and they're showing up in GE even when ranked 5-10 in organic search. Most of the basics are the same and there is hardly any evidence-based guidance on how to specifically optimize for GEO. After some digging, I found a research paper, and there are some key findings in that research paper. Research paper: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2311.09735 Top Performing GEO Strategies (Listed by Effectiveness) Quotation Addition (Up to 41% visibility boost) - Add relevant quotes from authoritative sources - Include direct quotes from experts and studies - Properly attribute all quotations Statistics Integration (Up to 35% visibility boost) - Convert qualitative statements into quantitative data - Include relevant numerical data and metrics - Add statistical evidence to support key points - Present data in clear, digestible formats Source Citation (Up to 30% visibility boost) - Add citations for key claims - Reference authoritative sources - Include links to original research - Maintain proper attribution Fluency Optimization (Up to 25% visibility boost)
