Finding the right back-up
I'd like to run this question by the community since I have reached the point in my business where I consistently need a back-up, or possibly more than one, in order to accept more birth clients. Just a little bit of context for you: birth attendance work in Italy is very very rare, Italian mothers are not familiar with the work of doulas and many hospitals simply do not allow us in. Only a handful of us actually have birth attendance experience, most doulas here are postpartum doulas. Over the years, I've actually managed to kind of break through this barrier, especially since I work with international clients who sometimes opt for homebirths, and when they don't, hospitals do find my presence useful to overcome the language barrier. So (knock on wood) this seems to be working and I am now receiving more requests than I can manage on my own. The thing is, I am finding it very very challenging to find one or more reliable back-ups. Since birth attendance is much more common in the US, I'd like to ask for your guidance and advice. For those of you who work with back-ups, did you go through a selection process with them, a sort of interview perhaps? If so, would you be willing to share what that was like and if there are any questions you'd absolutely ask a potential work partner? How do you manage contracts and payments? Are there any further insights you'd share with me on this matter? Thank you so much in advance, I am looking forward to reading what you all will have to say re this. 🙏

@Chiara Lops i also like to have a handful of people to be able to call on. I have my one go-to backup, but the others are just other doulas that I’ve met, reached out to directly, or have been recommended to me by the local midwives or another trusted source. I just spoke with one who will be backing me up next week, and we agreed on an hourly rate up to a certain amount as long as she stays the whole time. I’ve also just given a flat rate before from a portion of my fee. A lot of doulas won’t demand a fee for just being on call, since most of us are already on call anyway or are just happy to help if needed. Your situation may be a bit different, but I trust you can sort out the details. I understand the hesitation, but I feel that when it is addressed right in the beginning that this may be a possibility and if you can present it with a really positive spin, it can be really settling, that no matter what, that mama is going to have support. If something arises in your life in the course of her pregnancy, arrange for backup and just let her know the situation but that coverage is already in place for her. I hope that helps.

Have you noticed…
I’m sure everyone here has noticed the uptick in anxiety with clients, but I’m wondering if you have also noticed an increase in exclusively pumping moms because it gives them peace of mind knowing exactly how much their baby is getting?Trying to guide and educate some clients and friends on this front. how do you explain tactfully the differences and benefits of breastfeeding over exclusively pumping? (If they have the option)

@Chiara Lops yes, I’ve definitely noticed this too. And I can appreciate sharing the load, but I’m not sure how to help moms decide when to share the load. A lot of them want to share it overnight, which makes sense, but from the little I know, that’s some of the prime time for nursing because prolactin is high, right? I need to ask my IBCLC and breastfeeding experts friends, too!

@Amanda Smith this exactly… this is what I need to be introducing BEFORE they have their baby. Thank you!

devil’s advocate - i’m a bit confused on who you serve solely based on this description. You mentioned postpartum in a couple of places, so do you serve postpartum moms, or do you serve moms during pregnancy and through birth?
Who follows intentional birth?
They are two doulas, and they have some really great interview series on different topics. I’ve gotten some of my favorite tools from watching their trainings. The next series is on supporting perinatal loss (of any kind, not just losing a baby).
