The MayaDevi Temple in Lumbini Nepal.
It is said that for anyone who who has a buddhist practice, an interest in buddhist philosophy or takes regular buddhist teachings there are 4 sacred sites that a practitioner must visit at least once in a lifetime. One of these sites is the Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini Nepal. This is the exact place of the birth of the Buddha in the 7th century BC The other 3 sites are the Mahabodhi temple complex in Bodh Gaya in Bihar India where the Buddha reached enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree, The Dhamek Stupa in Sarnath close to Varanasi in Bihar India where the Buddha delivered the first sermon to his 5 disciples after reaching enlightenment on the subject of the 4 noble truths, and finally the Mahaparinavana stupa in Kushinager where the Buddha reached Parinarvana passing away. The MayaDevi Temple, is the site where the Buddha's mother Maya bathed in a pond that still remains, then walked 25 steps into the forest and supported by a banyan tree branch and her palace companions gave birth. The exact spot where the Buddha child stood and walked has been captured by preserving the very first footprint and can be viewed in the MayaDevi Temple.
