🏀 Installing LockLeft and Conceptual Offense
Quick update... I'm back on the bench coaching AAU. But instead of just doing it quietly, I thought it might be fun to document the whole thing with our SAVI coaches. 📋 Here’s what I’m hoping to share inside the SAVI Basketball membership: • Practice plans • Mic’d up practice segments • Game breakdowns • What’s working • What’s not working • Adjustments we make along the way Basically, you’ll get to see the whole process in real time as we build this team. Not just the polished stuff. And I’m going to ask for your help along the way too. The best part of the membership is having other coaches thinking through these things together. If that sounds interesting to you, this is a great time to jump into the SAVI Basketball membership and follow along as we build this team. Looking forward to sharing the journey. 👀 Question for you: What’s one challenge you’re dealing with right now as you build your team?

This sounds very interesting. Can't wait! My challenge: I've been a dad/assistant varsity coach for 3-4 years. Our head coach retired last week and I have put my name in the hat for the position. Also, I am coaching a summer team comprised of our school's JV and varsity players. I'm all in on LL and RDS but it is new to my guys and my challenge is how to implement these systems this summer in 1-2 practices per week. Thanks! PS - Speaking of LL. We implemented LL in three practices prior to our nationals a few weeks ago. We were competitive every game, finished 2-3 and were within 5 points of the overall champion midway through the 4th quarter. As I'm prepping for LL with my summer team, I decided to watch one of the national games that we played predominately LL. We lost the game by 2 points because our offense was anemic (help us RDS!!) but the LL metrics were insane! And only after 3 practices. Here is the message I sent my summer guys last night regarding LL: Gatlinburg Nationals: 1st Game vs App Christian: Defensive Efficiency 1) Fast Break: 0.8 PPP - 0 TO forced 2) 1-3-1: 0.8 PPP - 3 TO forced 3) No Middle M2M: 1.1 PPP - 1 TO forced 4) Lock Left: 0.4 PPP - 10 TO forced NOW: Dig into LL a bit further for this game and you get: 1) Lock Left (when we allowed them to go right): 0.67 PPP - 4 TO forced 2) Lock Left (when we forced them left): 0.29 PPP - 6 TO forced !!!!!!!! * We lost that game becuase our offense was anemic. FINALLY: Regardless what defense we played, what happened when they went left vs when they went right? 1) Going Right: 0.8 PPP - 5 TO forced 2) Going Left: 0.5 PPP - 9 TO forced This stuff works!!

@Ka`ala Kawai, appreciate the feedback. The data is great, unfortunatley it comes from me rewatching the games and logging every single possession on a spreadhseet. (I've got issues 😂). Bit it is great to share that information on our Band channel with the players and the parents to get that "buy in" early. Thanks again!

For me math is a gift and basketball is a problem. You mix the two and I"m in my wheel house! I love this. Would love to use this on our team!
Lock Left in a week?
Hi all! Our varsity boys run primarily a no middle M2M and a 1-3-1 in our half court. We’ve had a very disappointing season, primarily struggling to score the ball, averaging 47 pts per game. We have our nationals left which is 2nd week of March, with 1 full week of practice. I’m looking for a spark, a change of some type to spark some offense and was thinking of implementing lock left. Is it possible to do in 1 week? Thanks!

Thanks all for the comments. We are implementing LL this week and it is going great! Players love it and are having fun with it. Our national tournament is next week in Gatlinburg. Our 2nd game is against a team that has a 6'7" rim protector, and 2 6'2" very athletic guys. They don't shoot threes very well (27%) and they only represent 10% of their total points. Its all about getting to rim for them. We are definitly smaller and less athletic than those 3 guys. We have been practicing the "green" version of LL. Any advice on how to tweak LL or what version of LL to implement for a smaller less athletic team facing a nonshooting team with 2 or 3 rim attackers? Thanks!
