Took a Foggy -15°C Break for a Quick Hunt Today
Woke up to about -15°C and a wall of heavy fog this morning. I hadn’t planned on hunting at all, but after a couple hours of feeling completely unproductive at work, the woods started calling. One of the perks of being self-employed—I shut the laptop, grabbed my gear, and gave myself a three-hour window to see if any rough grouse or rabbits wanted to cooperate. Luckily one of my hunting grounds is only a 15 minute drive away. Stepping into the bush felt like walking into a different world. Everything was wrapped in frost—branches, deadfall, even the grass. The fog swallowed sound, so every step felt louder than it probably was. By the time I’d been out for a bit, even my string silencers had grown their own frosty beards. Didn’t spot any grouse or rabbits, but there was fresh scrape around and plenty of squirrel activity buzzing through the trees. At one point I stopped to take a break, just sitting on a log, letting the silence settle in. Until a little red squirrel chattered quietly up above me before creeping down a trunk toward me. He got close enough that I could see his whiskers twitching in the cold before he finally decided I wasn’t worth the trouble and darted off. Why can’t the animals we are after be so curious? Didn’t bring anything home, but honestly, the fresh air and the quiet did exactly what I needed. Sometimes just being out there is the real win. Hope everyone else is getting a chance to get out and enjoy the season, harvest or not. I got some video and photos from my morning.
