Post your best shots of your best birds here. I wanna see them pretty birds! Let's make it more interesting. I will post a end date in the future but most "liked" picture (all poultry welcome) gets a prize. Im thinking TSC gift card or something. What do yall think?
@Mohammad Irtaza Tafheem like all birds... it traps air close to the body creating a warm space. Chicken's body temp is 108F so that air under their feathers is warm.
The red crown on the head of hen and rooster seems some kind of a style... ...Which I thought during my childhood. But would love to know the actual purpose of it. I read in genetics chapter that the shape of the crown affects, based on genetic makeup. Would love to know more about it. Thanks!
The comb, as we call it here in the US (called a crown in other parts of the world) is a temperature regulator for the birds. Along with the waddles (the flaps hanging below their beak), these help regulate their temperature. They also differentiate males from females and will get brighter in color when reaching a sexual age. Like many birds, the males are trying to attract the attention of the females.
@Mohammad Irtaza Tafheem gardens need planning, tilling, weeding, watering, pruning, etc.... chickens need clean water and a coop. Depending on the breed, you may not have to feed them much either. Especially if you set up your systems right. I can do my chicken chores in about 15 minutes every day. I have never had a garden that only needs 15 minutes of labor a day. Lol
@Wendy Beatty I had a soul mate of a dog. A boxer. She was 14 and had had a cancer diagnosis for 11 of those years. I was spoon feeding her in the end. (Largely bc I babied her)... but I got covid really bad and I think me spoon feeding her got her sick too. No way to ever know, but she stopped eating at all and I knew it was time. Called the vet and they got us in at the end of the day (my vet at the time knew us very well and since retired) Anyways. She was my best friend. There will never be another like her.
@Nisana Miller I live in the "warm nose" and just been flooded. Though it does turn to ice at night. I was outside with no jacket today once the rain stopped. I was beginning to think I was going to have to blow dry the chickens if it didnt stop and give them time to preen dry.
