Behavior and body language
Before I began teaching I had made a list of many things I was not taught in lessons-years of lessons. The list of items was important for me to include in my program. The range of things was vast: from grooming and tacking up skills to handling on the ground, ground work, riding related things, communication, body language and herd behavior just to name a few. Every now and then someone will ask me why I teach that to everyone, since not everyone will be a horse owner. So, at least in part, here is my answer. A student can help prevent a MAJOR issue from forming, if they understand behavior well enough: Throughout the years I have had many students ā€˜catch’ or find my horse either choking or colicking. One 12 yr old once came out to get me while I was teaching to say, ā€œI think Blue is choking.ā€ And indeed he was. She noticed, and notified me early enough that hand walking got whatever it was dislodged and no vet visit was required. Pretty amazing. In another instance a new student in her second week of camp realized Lily was Colicing. Lily has quirks, but this was a bit much. She did downward dog in the aisle several times in a row. My students know my horses like to stretch, but repeatedly is not normal. This kid must’ve been maybe 10. She felt so good to know SHE caught that. And I did have to get a vet out. She had an impaction. I think those are things kids will remember. They actually helped a horse. Possibly saved a life. Yesterday, a student who I’ve been teaching over 8 years was here for her lesson. First you need to know that the horse is a lover of people: a stranger can go in his paddock and he’ll walk beside them. He’s curious, friendly and loves to be around people. So she goes in there and HE WALKS AWAY. weird. Second time HE TROTS AWAY. Then he decides to roll. After that he pawed, went to the gate and pawed some more. And about that time is when she told me he didn’t eat his breakfast. I’d like to point out that 2 years ago this horse was almost emaciated and he canters in from the field for his food. Very eagerly.

@Loretta Arey Sometimes when I hold mounted archery clinics I get people who are only focused on the shooting arrows off the galloping horse and they get annoyed bc I start slow and they spend 2 hrs on the ground learning to shoot this new style sitting on a barrel and getting proficient first then get on the horse and walking while being led bc some horses need to get used to it. They want to go balls to the walls and I don't let them. They forsake what is going on with the horse just to shoot, My motto -ride first, shoot second!

@Loretta Arey Yes, horse people! We have a lot of ignorant cowboy types out here so it has been a battle. I had to stop coaching a 4Hn club here bc of the stupid parents yelling at me to stop teaching biomechanics for better barrel turns and just tell them to run faster! I love Mary Wanless!
First attempt at an AI twin
I’m in a Skool group where they make AI twins to use for ā€˜faceless YouTube etc….. I learned that really being specific is the key. The owner had her prompt available, so I tweaked it to make my twin. One, I wish I was that young again, two, if I was I would just have my pic taken with my really dirty grey horse…. I like it. Trying to tweak to be more realistic, but she’s a great start!

@Loretta Arey so true, i was just telling one of my students. The other day, who said she was so glad that she decided to ride. Because it was cold and rainy. And she didn't feel like it, but she had such a wonderful lesson that she was glad she didn't cancel. And I told her the same thing, every time I hadn't felt like riding or going to the barn.I was always glad after I did! Besides missing wonderful moments, horses just make you feel better.

Before your next lesson read this:
Most riders think progress comes from riding more. But the most transformative riders I’ve coached weren’t the most talented — they were the most aware. Once you understand what’s actually happening in your body, everything changes: - Your balance improves - Your communication gets clearer - Your horse responds differently And suddenly… lessons make sense. That’s exactly what the Rider Reset Method teaches. Inside this community, you’ll start learning how to: āœ” Identify invisible riding habits āœ” Make micro-adjustments that create breakthroughs āœ” Feel confident and prepared for every lesson šŸ‘‰ If you want faster progress, weekly drills, and personalized feedback, join the Rider Reset Monthly Lab. That part of the horse world i hate - chasing ribbons and forsaking the rider and horse in the process! I ask all students before they start - what are your goals? Then I tell them the reality that they will ride with me at least a year to strip them down to their foundation and build them up from there. Some pass, and that's OK bc I don't want to waste time tea thing those how are only interested in cutting corners.
