Perimenopause, ADHD, and weight...oh my!
👋 Hi! 48 years old and new here. Perimenopause has thrown me for quite a loop. I'm on Estradiol and progesterone, which help manage my symptoms greatly. However, I was still experiencing severe brain fog, which led me to be tested and diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year. I'm taking Adderall, which is helping, but I'm having trouble finding the right dosage. My attention is improving, but I'm still struggling with word finding and losing my train of thought. Not sure if this is now average aging or a different cause. I have battled with my weight for my entire life. For two years, my insurance covered Wegovy, which kept me at a comfortable weight and eliminated all food noise. Once they removed that coverage, I regained all 35 pounds in less than 6 months, despite exercise and watching what I ate. I'm now taking a compounded GLP1 through Midi, which has helped me to lose 10 pounds in 3+ months. I'm exercising and lifting weights to maintain strength and muscle tone. It's so slow and I can't afford to up my dosage. I don't want to be thin, just comfortable in my own skin. I have Hashimotos, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea. For my age, I am on a ton of prescriptions to manage all of these things. Trying to solve my own problems... That's why I'm here.

@Brenda Gill Thanks! I agree, it's so complicated.

@Sonja Thomas Thank you for the warm welcome and I appreciate the supplement recommendation. While it hasn't really done anything for my weight, I've been using the app Over Fifty Fitness for almost a year now. It's the first thing I've stuck with consistently. It's helped me to build strength and maintain mobility. She has free workouts on YouTube and you can sign up for a free 2 week trial if you want to give it a try. Trying to focus on being strong over skinny.

Im bree, happy to be here. I’m having fewer periods and feeling fatigued. My dr will not check my hormones.

Bree, I would highly recommend looking into Dr. Mary Claire Haver. She shares a lot of great resources online, on Instagram, and has a couple of fantastic books. The New Menopause even includes a guide in the back to take to your doctor to aid in your discussion of hormones and perimenopause. Unfortunately, a lot of OB/GYNs don't have much, if any, training in menopausal care and it's something they have to investigate on their own (or not). I believe her Web site also has a directory of doctors that might be more open to providing the resources you need.
Intro - Meet Emily
Hi! I’m Emily. I am 35. I currently live in Utah but was born and raised in Aurora, IL. I’m a teacher of the Deafblind and love it. A year ago I was working on my health - with a heavy focus on fitness. I had a personal coach and was doing 2 HIIT classes per week. But, I was still always tired. When the school year started, in October I was working out and then felt sick and tired all day. This is when I stopped because I needed to save my energy for work. I thought it was my heart defect (because I had similar symptoms 11 years ago when I had heart failure and had to do a PVR). But, my heart is doing pretty well (only mildly elevated levels and stiffness and my valve is doing great.) I found this out a few weeks ago and spiraled because I wondered if I was just crazy. But the symptoms are real - and I don’t want to live like this forever. My hope is that in the next 30 days (or is it 90?) I will begin to have more energy and have a plan ahead of how to be the healthiest I can be! (Photo is recent of my niece and nephew and me. I’m a proud auntie!)

Emily, so glad you're here. And especially that you are trusting yourself. It seems so often, as women, we are told everything is in our heads. Just because your doctors aren't listening to you doesn't mean it's not true. I'm a literacy interventionist and love it, as you do. But between that and kids of my own with busy schedules, I know how hard it is to find the energy to take care of yourself. Good luck finding the answers you deserve!

Hi everyone! I’m Jessica from Canada. I’m 33 years old, and over the past year I’ve been struggling with overwhelming fatigue, feeling constantly stressed by work, gaining 60 pounds, eating on autopilot without really being present, and I haven’t exercised in over three months. I’ve also experienced two miscarriages in the last six months, which has been incredibly heartbreaking. It feels like my body has been through a complete hormonal storm, and I’m still trying to find my way through it. I’m here because I want to learn how to feel grounded again and reconnect with myself. More than anything, I’m hoping to meet other women who understand what this feels like. I know deep down that this isn’t because I’m lazy, unmotivated, or lacking knowledge about health. I truly believe there’s something deeper going on, and I’m ready to start healing from the inside out. I’m looking forward to connecting with all of you and learning from your experiences. ❤️
