So it’s 12am, I’ve just finished filming a video about “stop comparing yourself to people online,” genuinely felt like a whole prophet in that moment, very proud of myself. Then I put the phone down for exactly four minutes before I’m back on it, scrolling some guy’s page who has a nicer car, a nicer jaw, and apparently never sleeps because he’s also posting at 1am. And I’m just sitting there doing the thing. The exact thing. The thing I recorded a video about NOT doing, forty minutes prior. At some point I caught my own reflection in the black mirror of my phone screen mid-scroll and had to laugh at myself. Like genuinely out loud, alone, in my kitchen. Because I looked completely unhinged. A grown man in his kitchen at 1am silently competing with a stranger’s jawline. Closed the app. Ate a spoonful of peanut butter standing up like a raccoon. Went to bed. Here’s the actual point though, I don’t think the goal is to never do the dumb thing. I think the goal is catching yourself doing it faster each time, and being able to laugh instead of spiral about it. Took me 40 minutes that night. A year ago it probably would’ve been a lot longer, and a lot less funny.
