Karate as base for MMA
GSP, a legend in MMA, often talks about his karate base. “People think my takedowns come from wrestling but I’ve done karate for so long. You can use karate as a set up for punching people, to cover distance, or to put someone down. I use it to cover the distance and put people down, and I’m very good at it. A guy like Lyoto Machida does it too.”

I like that we train to take the back, clinch and all of those things in our style. It gives you cool building blocks to puzzle with.
Brent Black belt
Brent successfully didn’t die And passed his black belt exam. He was more stressed about this than his two full contact fights (of wich one fight groin kicks, and kicks to the head of a downed opponent were allowed) He is the second non-Japanese black belt in Rishinjuku karate. I personally am really proud as I have SFDOJO since 2013, and he is the first black belt in my club. WELL EARNED!

And now you're coming back to beat us up 🥳 congrats!
Motivation
Why do you train? For me self-defense (and to protect others) and self-confidence are at the core. Sparring, competition, strength training aren’t the goal. They are just tools. And you? Why do you train?

Ik started because I got bullied and my buddy said, come with me and now I do this because I want to get better

@Wouter Jeuris well it's mostly because I got mugged with a knife and the guy was a kickboxer so I didn't see any solutions like running away or screaming or... Later on we had some kind of mediation talks in the police station between victims and aggressors and they liked me because I said ''give me my money back and leave me alone'' instead of demanding compensation and punishment like the others. So they started introducing me to their friends as a chill guy that should be left alone.

Grappling and wrestling in karate does exist, but the ground game is entirely different with ground and pound. Did you already experiment with strikes on the ground? Just lightly tapping the face is enough. Make sure your training partner can show up the next day at work. 😉 https://youtube.com/shorts/Xp1X0jwfwmU?si=o3PIe1Kau1rUIoEn

Wim Deputter shared this Rickson Gracie fight which he called very boring, but very good application of grappling in MMA context: https://youtu.be/ocGl8Wjjiew
