6 contributions to Surrealism and Visionary Art
Portrait painting tutorial #1
I am a firm believer in fundamentals. Drawing always precedes painting. So I figured I would make some content for the classroom on some basic things. When painting in Oils, use a paint rag. Erase the whole face if you have to. But get the drawing right in oils before going too crazy with extra. 🤪 Palette setup is : Burnt Umber Burnt Sienna Raw Umber ( for the cool midtones in the shadows) Yellow Ochre and Titanium White Also I threw in ultramarine blue to use for the sky blue tones and mixed into the skin midtones occasionally. It’s complicated and I hope this video starts to help break that difficulty down into digestible chunks. Thanks for joining my Skool on Surrealism and Visionary Art. Please post some of your own work into the forums and please ask any questions that come to mind. We have two new members, thank you for coming. Please bear with me as I slowly build up the content for the classroom here. -All the Love, —Self

Let’s talk about the reasons we strive to recreate what gifts arrive from our imaginations. Let’s talk about accessing the Bardo and dream state in order to create fearless of death’s coming journey.

Creating is…
I’m getting back into sketching everyday as a primary goal. I draw with my son everyday and it has me getting back to basics. My studies of the Surrealist painters in the 1930s reveals the importance of their studies in the classical world. As a firm ground of grasping at their dreams, they were also studying what the masters before them left for us to see. The concept of ruins… these played a huge part in my visual style for years. Ruins echo the former civilization as much as they represent what we have created, they also represent the impermanence of being. What kind of symbols do you feel called to explore in your own work? What is the role which life drawing plays in your artistic practice? Do you incorporate studying old masters in your process? I hope that this group gets somewhere someday, I am really interested to know what other artists draw upon for inspiration?

Underpainting and You…
I’m starting my instructional courses for free until some action comes of all this… so forgive me, the first few tutorial videos will be awkward and have poor audio😂. It’s all a growing process, right!? I look forward to questions, feedback, shares of your art, new topics to explore. I am excited for the path to be revealed as we get curious together about what Visionary Art and Surrealism are, what Art even is, why it’s important and how we can do it better than ever before. In our inner and outer processes. I appreciate your interest. I am grateful you are here! -Dr. Self

I am an Oil Painter. I want to teach people skills to create from their dreamscapes and the collective unconscious. Would like to discuss philosophy.
