Welcome to Enginerd Studios on Skool
If you’re here, you’re serious about improving your recordings and your mixes. My name is Scott Baber. I’m a professional audio engineer and co-founder of Somni Studios in Bend, Oregon. For over 10 years, I’ve worked in recording, mixing, ADR, voiceover, podcasts, and live sound. I’ve collaborated on projects connected to companies like Disney, MGM, and 20th Century Fox — primarily on the engineering side. My background is rooted in: - 10+ years running professional studio sessions - Hybrid analog + digital workflows - Working with indie bands, singer-songwriters, and national touring acts - Classical and jazz training (20+ years as a musician) 🔹🔹🔹Why This Community Exists🔹🔹🔹 There’s a gap between: - Watching random YouTube tutorials - And actually understanding how to make your recordings translate This community is designed to close that gap. 🔹🔹🔹The Goal🔹🔹🔹 To help beginner and intermediate engineers: - Record cleaner tracks at home - Make confident mix decisions - Understand why something works — not just copy presets - Build systems that scale with your skill level 🔹🔹🔹This isn’t about hype, secret sauce, or plugin collecting.🔹🔹🔹 It’s about: - Signal flow - Intentional decisions - Repeatable processes - Real-world application 🔹🔹🔹What You Can Expect🔹🔹🔹 - Direct feedback - Clear explanations - Structured thinking - Practical workflows used in real sessions If you post a mix, you’ll get honest feedback. If you’re stuck on a technical issue, I'll troubleshoot it. If you’re building a home studio, I'll make sure you invest in the right areas first. 🔹🔹🔹How to Get the Most Out of This🔹🔹🔹 Start by introducing yourself below: - What DAW are you using? - What genres are you working on? - Biggest struggle right now? Be specific. The more context you give, the better the guidance. Welcome to Enginerd Studio. Let’s build your engineering skills the right way.

Hello All! Just wanted to give you a brief update to what's going on behind the scenes currently. I'm in the process of building out a full start to finish course for those who want hands on experience mixing a pre-recorded song. This will be the "flagship" course offered to VIP members. Once the main course is completed, I'm going to break off and start creating smaller courses, how-tos and more. These will be available to Premium and Free members. The community will continue to be free, and I'm happy to pop on and answer questions in each thread. If a topic has a lot of questions / merit, I'm happy to discuss in a Live Session to get more hands on. For those who want 1 on 1 coaching, consider a Premium or VIP membership. I'm trying to keep the costs low per month, while offering up my time to guide you through your mixes and questions. If there are other things you'd like to see added to the Enginerd Studio Skool & community, let me know! I'm here to help guide you though your journey in recording & mixing! Thank you! -Scott Enginerd Studio
Great Drum Sounds Start Before You Hit Record
This channel is dedicated to recording drums the right way. Full kits. Real rooms. Real players. We’ll cover everything from one-mic setups to 16+ mic sessions. Minimalist approaches. Full production setups. When more mics help — and when they just create phase problems. The core philosophy here: Source > Drummer > Mic placement / setup > Gear If the kit sounds bad in the room, the recording will reflect that. Tuning, head choice, damping, cymbal selection, and player dynamics matter more than your mic locker. We’ll break down: Drum prep and tuning Room choice and mic placement strategies Kick, snare, tom, overhead, and room mic approaches Phase alignment and polarity Editing and tightening techniques Sample reinforcement (not replacement) when needed Programming isn’t the focus here, but we’ll touch on it if it serves the conversation. You’ll see comparisons between different mic counts, different rooms, and different philosophies. The goal isn’t complexity. It’s control. If you can record drums well, everything else gets easier.

@Meshem Jackson Will definitely have a video going over the "crotch" mic in a drum course!
Submit Your Mix. Get Real Feedback.
This is where you post your mixes for review. The format is simple: Band / Artist Name – Song Title – Specific Concerns Be clear about what you want feedback on. Low end translation? Vocal balance? Harshness? Depth? If you don’t tell me what you’re unsure about, I’ll decide for you. Submissions must be a stereo bounce. Full sessions are reserved for paid members. Reviews will be public. I’ll record breakdowns weekly and post them here. I’ll also host additional live review sessions for paid members where we can go deeper. Every submission will be reviewed. First come, first served. There are a few rules. No AI-generated songs. The music must be written and created by a human. And post something that represents your best effort. This isn’t about perfection, but it should be intentional work. Expect direct feedback. Not harsh. Not sugarcoated. Clear, actionable notes you can apply immediately. If you’re serious about improving, this channel will move you forward quickly.

@Flavio Rubí Thanks for the submission! I'll review it on our Live Chat!
Performance Over Perfection
This channel is about recording vocals that feel real. Primarily music vocals. If questions come up around VO or ADR, we’ll cover that too. But the focus here is capturing a performance that translates emotionally and technically. The core principle: Performance over perfection. A perfectly tuned vocal with no emotion doesn’t win. A compelling take with small imperfections usually does. We’ll break down: Mic choice and placement Pop control and proximity effect Headphone mixes that help, not distract Comfort, lighting, vibe, and psychology Tracking clean vs tracking through compression or EQ — and when each makes sense Session setup and routing inside Pro Tools Comping workflows Tuning and timing strategies You’ll see how to build sessions that move fast and stay organized. Labeling. Playlists. Gain staging. Print tracks vs commit later. Decisions that save hours. We’ll also talk about coaching. How to communicate with singers. When to push. When to stop. When to take a break. Great vocal recordings aren’t accidents. They’re the result of preparation, clarity, and knowing when the take is the take.

Tone Starts Before the Mic
This channel is about recording guitar and bass with intention. Electric. Acoustic. Clean. Dirty. DI. Amp. Re-amping. All of it. The core philosophy here is simple: Tone is in the fingers. No amount of money can buy what time and practice will give you. Gear matters. Mic choice matters. Signal chain matters. But if the player doesn’t control dynamics, articulation, and feel, no plugin will fix it. We’ll break down: Electric guitar amp miking strategies Single mic vs multi-mic blends DI + amp combinations Re-amping workflows inside Pro Tools Acoustic guitar mic placement and room interaction Pickup systems vs microphones Bass DI, amp, and blended approaches We’ll also talk about tone at the source: Pickup height String choice and gauge Intonation Right-hand consistency Arrangement decisions You’ll see comparisons between mic placements, speaker positions, DI tones, and hybrid setups. We’ll address phase, low-end control, and how guitars and bass actually sit inside a mix. This channel isn’t about chasing boutique tone. It’s about capturing performance in a way that translates.
