Greetings from Sudan – Looking Forward to the Journey Ahead
Hello Eva, Thank you for welcoming me into the program. I'm excited to join and look forward to learning from your experience and engaging with the community. My background is rooted in Sudanese music, improvisation, composition, and sound practice, and I'm particularly interested in expanding my musical language through jazz. Looking forward to the journey ahead. Best regards,Husam Abdelsalam

Welcome, Husam!
A different approach to jazz violin improvisation
Every year, Dario Napoli organizes a gypsy jazz camp in Italy by the middle of June known as UTTS (Under The Tuscan Sun) where @Eva Slongo was teaching jazz violin for several years. 2026, at the 11th edition, we were only 4 violin players, this time with Roland Tillmanns, Phoebe Forsey, an English Lady and myself. This year the violin teacher was Christiaan van Hemert. I understood from 4 days of morning lessons that his approach to jazz violin improvisation involves: - Simplification of the chord changes (2-5-1 becomes 5-1, dominant chain, Christopher...)  - Constant awareness of these changes, “seeing” chord symbols in his mind's eyes rather than hearing them. Singing is not his preference.  - Chord symbols trigger automatized arpeggios and scales with or without permutations and approach tones (playing “dirty”).  - Hardly any licks at all  - Only the meta level (the big picture how to navigate the changes) remains conscious  - His practice strategy focusses on a tool he calls "Creative rerun" to develop vocabulary consisting in connecting automatized scales and arpeggios following the changes

NEW COURSE OF VIOLIN TECHNIQUE FOR VIP MEMBERS
Hello everyone! In June, we are starting a brand new violin technique course with the fantastic Ann Vancoillie. She is an incredible classical player and Concertmaster at the Opera Orchestra. She also studied jazz a few years ago and holds a degree in jazz violin as well! The course will take place on Mondays (when I don't teach). If you are interested in joining the VIP group, or if you are already a VIP member, could you please fill out the survey to help us set the schedule? Which schedule do you prefer for Mondays?

I NEED YOUR HELP...
For my upcoming Gypsy Jazz workshops in Switzerland and in the Cévennes, I have a small challenge to overcome. Since I am a violinist, my workshops naturally fill up with violinists. Yet, what I love above all else is creating genuine interaction between violinists and other instrumentalists. That is why I chose to offer global Gypsy Jazz workshops rather than exclusive jazz violin workshops. The problem is that I am still short on guitarists and double bassists—and why not other instruments—to equip our workshops and get the tunes rolling in real-world conditions! How can you help me? I am relying on WORD-OF-MOUTH. If you know any guitarists or double bassists around you, or other instrumentalists who want to learn gypsy jazz, please tell them about my workshops in Fribourg and in the Cévennes. It is the perfect opportunity to work on accompaniment, la pompe, rhythmic placement, and improvisation within a real collective of musicians. We happily welcome guitarists or other instrumentalists who want to discover the style, as we have several teachers available. As for the double bassists, they will have the luxury of getting individual lessons... 👉 All the info on both workshops and the full schedule of the Sessions Manouches festival are available here: https://www.evaslongo.com/sessions-manouches-links Thank you so much for your help and for sharing, and see you very soon for more music! Eva
