🕊️ Ash Wednesday is in 3 Days — What Are You Giving Up for Lent?
I don't know about you, but it's way too easy for me to find myself in the middle of Advent or Lent and realize I completely missed it. So this year, I'm trying to be more intentional and really usher in the magic of the Lenten Season for my family. Reminding my parents and siblings it's coming, inviting friends to Mass on Ash Wednesday, and of course doing lent together with this community. My family is giving up all social media for 40 days. We recognize it's pretty toxic for us and takes away time we could be spending together building, creating, or just enjoying each other's presence. In that time we get back, our goal is to: - Work out together - Pray as a family - Watch good movies. Lent is 40 days. That's enough time to break an addiction, build a new rhythm, and let God enter the space we've been filling with noise. So what are you giving up for Lent? If you haven't taken the time to think about it, use the comments below to write something down and make it real. If we all share something we want to give up on this post, I think we can really make this the best Lent we've ever had. P.S. Our first Catholic Homesteaders call will be Wednesday night at 6pm CST. @Aaron Amezcua and I have some pretty cool things planned, so I hope you can make it. We'll meet everyone, share the intention for this community, and break out into small groups so you can actually connect with other members. I know we sometimes have resistance to joining a new call with a new community, but I encourage you to take the leap. We're all Catholic, we all want to build homesteads, and we're all tired of suburban dependency. That's going to make for some awesome connections if we let it. Drop a 🙋 below if you're joining live. Let's usher in Lent together. — Erick

We are planning to join call 🙋‍♀️ I am giving up social media and news, following the Eat Fast Feast book, adding in Morning Prayer, and attending daily Mass 4 times per week instead of only attending on Thursdays (and of course Sundays :)

@Erick Amezcua secular audio books (cozy mysteries) are definitely something i could give up for Lent … maybe next year 😁
Hello!
Hi, my name is Sara. I'm from Northeastern Wisconsin and I joined this community because my son and I recently moved to a rural area and want to learn to homestead and be more independent by growing our own food (fruit, veggies, ducks, goats, honey, maple syrup, mushrooms). By doing this, we want to grow closer to God and learn how to care for His creation as we are called to do. We are active at our local parish and are near the Shrine of Our Lady of Champion.

@Erick Amezcua Our decision was not our own - it is God’s will in our lives. My husband of 23 years died from ALS in April 2023. I went from taking care of him to emotionally supporting our devastated children. My son Cyrus has level one autism spectrum disorder and still struggles with grief. I had been praying for clear guidance from our Lord about what to do with my stressful work and whether we should move from our family home in Minnesota since January 2025. By the spring, i knew that we needed to move but I wasn’t sure where to go. Initially, I thought of moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for more resources for my son and to be closer to my daughter in Chicago. Memorial day weekend we traveled to Holy Hill outside of Milwaukee and looked at churches and neighborhoods. When I returned to work on Monday after Memorial Day weekend, I learned that my position has a federal contractor had ended, and I would be done working at the end of the day. Prayers were answered about whether to leave my job or not. Later that month, I talked to my older son who is a State Patrol officer and he said he did not feel like Milwaukee was a safe place for his brother and I. This helped me reevaluate and discern that i was still trying to be in control and had not fully surrendered. I reached out to another family member who had lived in Milwaukee and he confirmed what my son said. We continued to ask for intercessions and say the Surrender Novena continuously. Under the guidance of my uncle who was our real estate agent, my son and I worked to prepare our house to sell, leaving the rest to our Lord. We had lived in our family home since 2012. From the night we moved in there was some kind of ghost or spirit who had terrorized my children. We ended up having to have an exorcism in English (didn’t work) then a second one in Latin and Mass said in our house to get the demon out. On the one hand it was sad to leave our family home, especially because we had fought so hard for it, but on the other hand, we were excited to have a new time in our lives and for our Lord to show us what we should do and where we should go.

@Erick Amezcua we are finding a quieter life and building our routine around prayer, animal care (rabbits), farming needs (mushrooms), baking/cooking/cleaning, and attending mass and adoration most days is like balm to our bodies, minds, and souls!

My name is Aaron, and that’s my brother Erick behind the camera. We’re building our homestead in Missouri with goats, chickens, bees, and soon a dairy cow. We’ve been here about two years and plan to continue building for the next decade. We created this community because we believe Catholic families are being called back to the land to live sustainably, create abundance from the bottom up, and orient our lives toward glorifying God. This is a place to share wisdom, visions, and practical steps as we build our futures together. Our first live meeting will be Wednesday, February 18th from 6–7 PM (Central Time). We’re excited to meet you, hear your story, and begin this journey together. Welcome! this is just the beginning.

Pope Leo’s encouragement
Hello, my son and I are excited to be part of this community. Could you please share how Pope Leo XIV encouraged catholics to homestead?
