What is Biblical Counseling?
Biblical counseling is a form of counseling that relies exclusively on the Bible as the sufficient and authoritative guide for understanding human behavior, problems, and the process of change. Often described as a form of "focused discipleship," it views the human heartārather than just the mind or environmentāas the primary source of life's struggles. Unlike secular psychology, which often focuses on self-actualization or symptom relief, biblical counseling aims for spiritual transformation (sanctification) and a restored relationship with God. Core Principles Ā· The Sufficiency of Scripture: Proponents believe the Bible contains all the necessary information to understand a person's spiritual needs and how to live in a way that honors God, regardless of circumstances. Ā· The Role of the Holy Spirit: Real heart change is seen as a supernatural work. The counselor acts as a guide, but the Holy Spirit is considered the "Wonderful Counselor" who provides the power to change. Ā· Heart Over Symptoms: While it acknowledges physical suffering, it emphasizes that "out of the heart come the issues of life." It seeks to address "disordered desires" and reorient them toward worshiping God. Ā· Church-Based Care: It is typically practiced within the context of the local church rather than in a clinical, state-licensed setting.
