Say Hello 👋
Before diving into politics, investigations, accountability, public life and the occasional mildly confusing governance structure — introduce yourself. Tell us: Who are you? What brought you here? Are you interested in: • Politics? • Journalism? • Community issues? • Campaigning? • Accountability? • Research and investigations? • Or are you simply trying to make sense of the increasingly confusing world around us? And one final question: What is one issue you care about where you live? A local problem? A national issue? Something that simply does not seem right? You never know — someone here may already be looking into something similar. Welcome aboard, and thank you for joining our Skool community... it's going to be a ride!

Hi! My name is Samuel, and as I'm the founder of the community I thought I'd start... I wanted to do two things with Spectator to Citizen, firstly build a community of citizen journalists, researchers, activists etc to support each others efforts, and secondly to pass on the skills and knowledge I have gained after a varied professional career and some successful local activism. My passions are politics, journalism, and local issues, so finding a platform to combine all three has been an amazing journey so far. The British Standard Substack has been a great success and played a significant role in driving local change. Hopefully through Skool I can find like-minded people and form a sort of skills and information exchange based community. As a sample of my experience I have worked in local government for a decade, been a journalist and then Head of News in local television, the founding CEO of an arts and heritage charity, and heavily involved in several successful local campaigns for change. I'm really excited and looking forward to meeting you! Samuel
Research Tools & Resources
If there is one thing most investigations, campaigns and accountability efforts eventually have in common, it is this: At some point, somebody says: “There must be a way to find this information…” Usually, there is. You just need to know where to look. This section exists to share useful tools, websites, techniques and resources that help people better understand what is happening beneath the surface. Things like: Research & Investigation Tools - FOI requests - Planning portals - Companies House - Charity Commission records - Electoral data - Land Registry - Council documents - Public consultation systems - Mapping tools - Open data sources Journalism & Investigation Support - Fact-checking tools - Verification techniques - Recording and transcription tools - Research workflows - Media monitoring - Public records searching Practical Civic Tools - Templates - Guidance documents - Campaign resources - Public speaking tips - Consultation responses - Complaint routes - Accountability mechanisms And increasingly: - AI & Digital Tools Useful apps, research assistants, automation tools and clever bits of technology that make investigations quicker, clearer or simply less soul-destroying. Found something useful? Share it. Discovered a brilliant free tool? Post it. Built a good system? Tell people. Because nobody should have to spend six hours reinventing a process somebody else solved last Tuesday. The aim is simple: Build a shared toolkit for ordinary people trying to understand and improve the world around them.

What Is Happening Where You Live?
This section is for local issues, campaigns, community concerns and public accountability. Tell us: - What is happening in your town, city or community? - What issue matters? - What seems unfair, broken, confusing or unresolved? - Have you started a campaign? - Need help understanding process? - Trying to work out who actually controls a decision? - Want advice before speaking publicly? - Need help getting traction? Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing where to start. The good news? There are people here who have likely been through something similar already. One small request: Try to bring facts, context and evidence where possible. Frustration is understandable. But informed frustration tends to be considerably more effective. You may be surprised what ordinary people can achieve when they organise, ask sensible questions, and persist.

What Is Happening Where You Live?
Investigations & Research Hub
This section is for people actively looking into issues, investigating claims, researching public decisions, or trying to understand what is actually going on beneath the headlines. Need help with: • Research tools? • FOIs? • Public records? • Council documents? • Timelines? • Planning systems? • Companies House? • Land Registry? • Evidence gathering? • Sense-checking a claim? Post it here. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes sees something you have missed. Sometimes somebody has already solved the problem you are stuck on. And sometimes you simply need reassurance that you are not disappearing into a research rabbit hole entirely alone. One important rule: Evidence first. Curiosity is encouraged. Claims are fine. Questions are welcome. But assumptions without evidence tend to create more heat than light. Good investigations are patient. Good investigations are fair. And occasionally, good investigations begin with someone simply asking: "Hang on… that doesn’t quite add up.” So... what have you been looking into?
