This commandment is not merely a rule, but a declaration of his sovereignty and a call to exclusive devotion. It reminds us that God alone is worthy of our worship and allegiance, By placing him first, we acknowledge his supreme authority and our dependence on him. Deuteronomy, 5:7 reiterates this command: 'You shall have no other gods before me' in both passages, the emphasis is clear. Our hearts are to be undivided in their devotion to God, but why is this so crucial because anything that competes for our allegiance diminishes our relationship with him.
