The $20,000 mistake I made as a DevOps beginner:
I thought I needed expensive servers, fancy racks, and professional gear to start my homelab. Truth? You can start with a 10-year-old laptop. Here's why waiting for the "perfect setup" is killing your career: • Real learning happens when you get your hands dirty • Theory without practice is worthless • Commands feel different on a real system • Making mistakes is how you grow The minimum you need to start: - Any laptop with 4GB RAM - Ubuntu Server - Basic Linux knowledge - Willingness to break things Don't wait for the perfect moment. Your career growth is worth more than perfect hardware. What's holding you back from starting your homelab today?

I put together my first home server using an HP EliteDesk 800 G4 SFF that a car dealership was literally throwing away. Hardware is cheap or even free if you know where to look and you don't need much to get Debian/Ubuntu server running with some Docker containers. Also note that the upcoming EOL of Windows 10 is making anything with a 7th Gen Intel processor or older very cheap on the used market. Some company's e-waste can be the foundation of your homelab!

Hello KubeKraft! I'm Roy. I've been running around my small town in Southern California for a number of years helping folks out with all sorts of tech problems. Device repairs, WiFi upgrades, application support, and a whole lot more. I've always had a fascination with UNIX/Linux, the command line, and servers (I was checking out books from my local library about UNIX when I was a kid...) and when I found out that you could get paid to do deep technical work in a terminal all day, I knew I had to find out more. It was actually Mischa's videos about Obsidian, one of my favorite applications, that brought me here. My goal is to develop my DevOps skills and escape the "small town IT guy" grind for something more sustainable and fulfilling. I look forward to learning with you all.
