Should You Offer a Free Trial for Your Skool Community? Hot Take
My hot take on Skool free trials has changed. I used to think offering a 7 day free trial for a paid Skool community was a great idea if you could get the strategy right. I still technically believe this but my advice for most is different. After looking at more data, watching what successful Skool community owners are doing, and seeing how much actually goes into converting free trial members into paying members, I don’t think most Skool owners should offer one. Free trials sound simple. Turn on the 7 day free trial, let people experience your community, and hopefully they stay and become paying members. But you’ve actually created another job. You need strong onboarding, a clear path for those 7 days, quick wins, consistent follow up, a conversion strategy, and a plan for things like declined cards. You also need to track your free trial conversion rate so you know whether the trial is actually helping your community make more money. Meanwhile, newer Skool community owners are already trying to figure out their offer, pricing, traffic, content, sales, member results, and retention. My recommendation is to get your paid community working first. I’d personally want to be around $10K MRR before adding a free trial as something to test. And TEST is the important word. Turn it on with a strategy. Track what happens. If your free trial members aren’t converting into paying members, turn it off. Figure out what needs to change. Then test it again later if it makes sense. If you want to give potential members something for free, your CONTENT can be the free sample. Create more content outside of your Skool community. Get more people discovering you, learning from you, and understanding how you can help them. Let your paid community be where people invest to go further. More free access does not automatically mean more paying members. Before turning on a Skool free trial, ask yourself: Is my paid offer already selling? Do I know exactly what happens during someone's first 7 days?

Thanks @Jenna Ostrye for sharing this. I'm gonna have to DM you to ask about your paid community... but here's my personal experience with free trial... For my community the test came back the other way, and I think it's an audience thing rather than a strategy thing. My people are prophetic entrepreneurs. They're builders, but they won't build off their own strategy, so before they commit to anything they have to discern whether it's the thing God is asking them to build or if it's a community that can help them in their current season. That takes seeing inside to see whether this room/community is where they're supposed to be. Asking for feedback when people churn has been powerful. When I ask why they left, it's always valuable data. It's that they hadn't had a chance to look properly yet and they'll come back when they're ready. (Without the trial, most of them would never have been inside to come back to.). And I've had declined cards go through on a follow up... So I'd say the same thing you are, just from the other side: don't turn it on because the toggle exists, and don't leave it off because the general advice says wait. Turn it on, track it, and let your own numbers tell you who your people are.🙌

So good! Since this post is about Freemium, can I ask here @Jenna Ostrye — my community is currently freemium model but thinking of switching to free trial soon. If i do that, how do I set it up so that Standard members (while freemium) won’t be able to access the Standard modules in the Classroom? TIA 🙏 To clarify: right now with freemium, Standard members can access free modules and have to upgrade to Premium unlock the rest of the modules. When I switch it to free trial, then it’ll mean, future Standard members should get instant access to Modules which were previously Premium-only. Am i making it complicated? ☺️
