Why Your Classroom Needs a Vision Before It Has a Theme
I used to obsess over color palettes and bulletin board ideas. But one year, I paused and asked: “What do I actually want this classroom to feel like for my students?” That shift changed everything. When you start with a clear vision, your physical space, your classroom norms, even your lesson style starts to align with purpose. It’s not about Pinterest-worthy decor. It’s about creating a space that reflects the values and culture you want to build. Ask yourself: What do I want students to say about this room when they leave in June? Start there. The rest will follow.

This is so true, I see it all the time where teacher actually overwhelm students with thematic work that eventually is a trigger for them. I use my self as an example. My theme one year was “colors of the world” I had so much stuff in my classroom that I was over stimulating my children. I removed some of the “themed” decoration and my behavior in the class got better and they were able to pay more attention. Pro tip: teachers don’t hang a lot of objects from the ceiling if you want your students to focus on you.

I want to really master differentiation! I still feel like I am a novice even though it is said that I do it really well. I want to be able to differentiate for each student not just a small majority of them based on a deficiency. I want them all to have a unique experience and each have their own learning path. Kind of hard to do with a room of more than 25 students.

I help schools manage students' behavior in urban settings, especially among black boys.
