Great Trek
The Great Trek is now over, we have travelled from Capetown to the Mozambiqu and Eswatini borders and skirted Lesotho and now returned to Capetown. We have seen all the large animals except for whales and added at least 6 bird species to add to ebird. Walked with elephants, played with monkeys, flirted with parrots! We saw great scenery, camped under the stars, endured a storm deluge, drove in a small car on roads suitable only for 4x4s, dived in the Indian ocean and met great people. When I return to the UK I will reveal all.
Sounds like a fantastic time, looking forward to the reveal
Camping or room?
We are travelling to Durban, we had a fantastic day in the Drakensberg Mountains. We had intended to camp overnight, but with the build up of thunderstorms I decide to choose caution over valour and decided to stop at a camp with self catering overnight. It was a great idea as the beds are comfortable and the site is clean. The gardens are really nice. 👌 on our travels I have seen several new lifers, birds that I have not registered before. Some we have photographed, some not. Durbs, here we come!

Gareth — good call choosing comfort over bravado with thunderstorms building. ⛈️👌Clean site, hot meal, and new birds on the way through? That’s a win. What’s the best “new lifer” you spotted today? 🐦📸
@Gareth Parkes Gareth — I just went down the rabbit hole on those birds. Wild stuff. That Crowned (Hawk-)Eagle is no joke. Seeing one in the flesh had to feel heavy in a good way — like the woods got real for a minute. And that Woodland Kingfisher… we’ve got kingfishers here, but they don’t light up like that. Whole different kind of color. Woolly-necked Stork is straight-up elegant, Hammerkop looks like it rolled in with a built-in haircut, and the Bittern/Glossy Ibis combo is right in my lane — we’ve got bitterns in the swamps here too, but that glossy ibis is just plain pretty. If you had to call one “best sighting” from that stretch, which one are you putting on top? Where the Map Ends, The WILD begins!! Stay Rugged.
Birds galore
Royal Natal is a gem in the Drakensberg, Surrounded by beautiful mountains, greenery, waterfalls, rapids and cascades. A place Princess Elizabeth visited before she ascended the throne. The hotel they stayed in and a place I visited in my youth are long gone.

A nostalgia visit
I used to live in Northern KZ Natal and knew Durnacol coal mine quite well and visited several other mines frequently. On Saturday we decided to visit the Talana Battleground museum where the Boers and British clashed to the Boer advantage. The museum has a visitors centre amed after Senator and Sheila Henderson whom I knew well. There are few interesting exhibits all based on Local and imported culture and historical wartime events and coal mining. In the mining section I was able to see some of the exhibits prepared by my daughters grandfather.

Gareth — sounds like a wonderful trip, brother. 🇿🇦🪨⚔️ That kind of “walking the old ground” nostalgia is hard to beat. And how cool is it that you got to see exhibits your daughter’s granddad helped put together — that’s family history done right. 👏🔥 What hit you the most out there? 👇 Where the Map Ends, The WILD begins!! Stay Rugged.
Travel North
Today after 7 days of outdoor photography adventures and birding in Capetown Fi and I are leaving to drive North. My laptop has spent more time updating itself so when I can get a break from busy days I will compile a few photos and give more in depth insights.
