This being Thursday, I would say reflection questions...for myself. I met with my "soul sister" group and one of the things we are talking about is developing a practice of nonthinking and nontalking....learning to be in communication with yourself. Nonthinking is a very important practice ...think about it...a lot of our thinking is caught up in dwelling on the past, trying to control the future, generating misperceptions and worrying about what others are thinking. Mindful breathing is a practice of nonthinking and nontalking. Just one of several things we will notice when we stop talking and things and we listen mindfully to ourselves, is our greater capacity and opportunities for joy. Mindful breathing is a practice of nonthinking and nontalking. Thoughts?

You are so right. Learning to be mindful can help you first. Communicate with you first and it makes other communications better.

🐾 Friday Fun Day: Not All Enrichment Looks the Same
Just as we all have different ways of relaxing, learning, and staying engaged, so do our animal companions. Enrichment activities not only give them a chance to unwind, it gives you a chance to spend quality time together. A long walk or game of fetch can be wonderful, but physical exercise is only one piece of the puzzle. Sometimes just 10 minutes of focused mental engagement can help a companion feel calmer, more settled, and more fulfilled. Here are a few ideas to try: 🌿 For the explorer Hide treats around the house or yard and encourage them to use their nose to find them. 🧩 For the thinker Offer a snuffle mat, puzzle toy, or food-dispensing activity that encourages problem-solving. 🎾 For the active companion Try a short training game, obstacle course, or interactive play session that engages both body and mind. ❤️ For the sensitive soul Enjoy a calm enrichment activity such as licking mats, gentle massage, quiet scent work, or simply spending focused time together. 🌎 For the curious learner Introduce a new object, safe texture, scent, or environment to explore at their own pace. Today's Question: What enrichment activity does your companion enjoy most? Bonus question: Have you noticed that some activities help them feel calmer while others leave them more energized? Share a photo if you'd like—we'd love to see your companion having fun! 🐾💚

Welcome, Gemma.
What does Safety look like?
There was a time when I thought helping an animal feel “safe” simply meant meeting their physical needs. Food. Exercise. Training. Routine. But over the years, I began noticing something deeper. Some animals had everything they were “supposed” to need… and yet still seemed anxious, reactive, shut down, hypervigilant, or unable to fully relax. What changed the relationship wasn’t more control. It was emotional safety. Slowing down. Listening differently. Reducing pressure. Creating trust through consistency, presence, and understanding instead of correction alone. Sometimes behavior is not asking to be fixed. Sometimes it is asking:....“Do I feel safe enough to soften here?” I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences around this. Have you ever noticed your animal companion responding differently when they felt truly safe, understood, or emotionally supported? 🐾 What was it that you think that made them felt truly safe?

I would like to share this example about a horse (Willow) who needed more than what you describe: shut down, fearful, pulled away. Willow was from a breeder (who bought her from another breeder). Her new owner worked with her for almost 2 years before asking if I could help her. At that point, she was sometimes able to get a halter on Willow and bring her to the barn when necessary. She fed her in a bucket that she held so that Willow had to get that close to her. I practice Jin Shin Jyutsu, which is an amazing healing art from Japan. JSJ works by helping to restore harmony and balance to the body, by restoring the flow of energy within the body. It has a powerful ripple effect for those near a being receiving a session. Because I couldn't get near Willow, we brought both Willow and her pasture mate (Chloe) into side by side stalls. I worked for 3 sessions with Chloe and we could see Willow begin to release. At the end of the 3rd session, I could go into Willows stall but not touch her. By the 4th visit I was able to start touching Willow, and by the 5th, I could start with her. We saw some great improvement over a bit of time. Her owner actually had an animal communicator do a reading to find out what had happened and it helped us understand the cause. The communicator let us know this would be a long term project. There were changes the owner made in her approach and expectations which also helped Willow to relax and change.
