The Costly Mistake I Made Starting My Market Garden – And How You Can Avoid It"
One of the biggest mistakes I made when setting up my market garden was waiting until I had produce ready to harvest before promoting it. I thought everything needed to be perfect, and I feared overpromising a date I couldn’t meet. But looking back, I realize that waiting was the wrong approach. You don’t need to have a finished product to start building excitement. Instead of holding off, I should have shared my journey and vision with the community from the start. What I learned is that people love following a process, especially when it’s authentic. If I had shared my struggles, my small wins, and even the challenges I faced along the way, I could have built a connection with potential customers long before my first harvest. It’s not about waiting for the perfect moment to sell—it's about bringing people along for the ride. I could have told them, “Hey, I’m starting this market garden. I don’t know exactly when it will be ready exactly this year, but I’d love for you to follow the journey with me.” By doing that, I would have created a community around my project, a group of people invested in my success. Then, by the time my veggies were ready, I wouldn’t have to worry about finding customers. They would already be there, excited and waiting to support me. So, if you’re in the early stages of a project like this, my advice is simple: don’t wait for perfection. Share your story, your ups and downs, and invite others to be part of the journey. That way, when you’re finally ready to sell, you’ll have a loyal and engaged audience that’s been with you from day one and who’s been cheering you on. A simple thing to keep in mind, that will make a huge difference in your journey!
