The origin of the word “belief” is more beautiful than most people realize. It comes from Old English “gelēafa”, meaning faith, trust, or confidence. That word traces back to a Proto-Germanic root *laub, connected to the idea of holding something dear or loving it. So originally, to believe didn’t just mean thinking something is true. It meant trusting something… holding it close… valuing it enough to place your confidence in it. Over time the meaning shifted, especially through religious use, to mean accepting doctrines as true. And today we often use it as a purely mental idea. But historically, belief began as a relationship of trust, not just a conclusion of the mind. In other words, a belief was something you held dear enough to trust.
