Be merciful, I’m new haha
The “ugly stage” - ride it out or do something to fix it? I don’t know what is the best practice and I have been finding conflicting info so I hoped that someone here could give me some advice.

@Gavin Rodrigo also - the intake sponge is so gross, but do I leave it alone or rinse it with ro/di water? Will I wipe o it the good bacteria if I rinse it? This journey has been so humbling 🙃 I feel like i have no clue what im doing anymore

@Gavin Rodrigo Thank you so much Gavin! I was nervous to hear that I was doing something detrimental for them, so I’m glad it’s not, and thank you for being kind! I was doing a water change today anyways but that was after this picture was taken. I tested the water before I changed it and the nitrates were high, the ammonia was good and phosphates too. So I tested nitrates again after I changed 5 gallons and it was lower but not under 20 yet - would you suggest that I do another change in a couple days or wait the full week?

Introduction
Hi Everyone! 👋🏼🐠 My name is Rebecca, I’m from Ontario Canada. 1. How long you've been keeping aquariums: I am about 2 months into my aquarium journey (6 weeks with livestock) 2. What current setups you have: I have a 36 gallon tank which I want to be a macroalgae oasis vibe and a 20 gallon tank that I plan to add a few corals to down the line. 3. All-time favorite fish/aquarium creature: favourite fish I currently have is a toss up between my yellow watchman goby and exquisite firefish. 4. Biggest struggle in your tank right now: I think I’ve gotten over the biggest hurdles my struggle is being patient before adding in corals etc 5. Biggest win in your aquarium journey so far: finding the right balance for which fish get along - every fish I’ve gotten doesn’t seem to fit their profiles but it’s all harmonious now!
