15 contributions to Learning with AI & Technology
Monday Thoughts
Hello Folks. As you can see from bio etc, I am just getting started in this community. I watched a second Frank Youtube on scanning: "How I digitize books.." I have a million topics I would love to pursue. Frank will give me some direction on how he imagines a over sharer like myself can contribute without downing other out. Lets try this thread, I use an old windows outliner called keynote to organize my life. Frank talks about obsidian, onenote, and something that sounds like sprinkle? (Frank said he had done a video on it but I could not surface?) After 20 years I am ready to try a new organizer. NOT for collaboration, just for me. When I have an idea, I open a note and pile thoughts into it. Keynote allows me to make the note into a tree so I can expand it into sub categories. Thoughts? What do you use?

Hi Tom! At the moment, I use OneNote to keep my notes (not as good as it sounds is it? ;-) ). I used to love Mind Maps, but I had so many of them, I couldn't find the "one" that I was looking for... Back then, floppies were a "thing" and boxes and boxes of them didn't help, oh well... I did get a 10GB Hard Disk and that helped somewhat. Frank does have some interesting ideas on this channel and YouTube. Look around and I am sure you will see something that strikes a cord for you. Have a Wonderful Day! RayW

Hi @Tom Pears ! Keeping your thoughts organized is impossible without a method... I have literally stacks of steno pads that never get touched, thinking that "someday" I will get back to them and find a way to make them useful again (they are in storage at the moment). Frank does have a mind map / connected graphs program that he mentioned earlier on the board that definitely would be a goodie for me... In the past I was definitely into mind mapping, again in the days where everything was pretty much independent of everything else. Things are starting to integrate now, and with AI, it may actually become VERY useful. I am up there in age myself, so I understand what you are saying... I am kinda a techie also, so I do the best I can! Have a Wonderful Day! RayW...
AI Maturity Scaffold
In education, we have a range of adoption for new technology - from those that want to run with it to those that want to shut it down. AI is a great example of this. There's a lot to be said about SAMR and TEF models (I am happy to discuss these), but the first step in my opinion is to think in terms of a Maturity Scaffold. One that takes a pragmatic approach and doesn't try to rebuild the world, but rather to make our existing one better first. What do you think is the most important way to introduce AI into learning and teaching?

I actually had to lookup what SAMR and TEF models are... SAMR is good for efficiency and TEF is something for teachers for higher education... To tell the truth, I wasn't really into these... Educating students is imparting a set of concepts in a way that the students can understand (hopefully fully), and use as needed. It would also be nice if the students remembered beyond the tests ;-) ... The main methods I used was the Socratic Method - This allows the students to fully understand the concept and discuss their understanding at a deep level (similar to a child perpetually asking "Why?", but better ;-) ). When they get through the discussion, generally they understand the concept from multiple angles and are ready to remember it, this is where Spaced Repetition comes in (and The Memory Book). I did this as a tutor for literally 100s of kids, and it works REALLY well! All these things can be computerized and AI would definitely help with the Socratic Method. Of course, it would be best to teach someone in the path they learn best, like VARK - Visual (good for computers ;-) ), Auditory (talking about it, computers would work), Reading and Writing (notes - kept with computers?), Kinesthetic (learn by doing - Create a play?) . Having Fun Learning is ________! (Fill in the Blank for 1 point.) Have a Wonderful Day! RayW...
Learning How to Learn - with AI
Happy Friday everyone! We are getting closer to the upcoming course that runs in February on our Learning and AI Community - I'm looking forward to seeing the results you achieve. Please let me know if you plan to attend the course (it's free for the first intake - you can't beat that price!). Even if you cannot attend all sessions, they will be recorded and shared with those that are taking the course. To enroll, please respond to this post letting me know. I will then be closing the course to everyone except the people that respond so that I can close the recordings to only participants. I'll be doing this early next week - so don't delay. As a reminder - here is the course outline:

@Frank Bergdoll , Hi... I would like to join your class, if I may... I am curious if you are interested in Wozniak's Supermemo program's Spaced Repetition SM-2 or SM-17 algorithm version or even an off-shoot of one of them... It was like 40 years ago, but I remember it well. I wonder why ;-) ? Have a wonderful day! RayW...

@Frank Bergdoll Yeah, he didn't actually invent the idea, but was the first to implement it in a scientific paper and a computer program... I am sure I that ...have a copy of the paper if you like (somewhere). BTW it isn't Steve it is Piotr or something like that ... Have a Great Day! RayW...
The Course Plan - a Year of Learning
I've been working on the year of learning for this community - that's right, an entire YEAR of content. While I'm focused on the upcoming "AI for Learning and Study" coming up February, I also want to create a set of 3-6 other courses to run in subsequent months. The idea is that I'll have a group of these courses that I run a couple of time each throughout the year (depending on community growth, interest, and available time on my part) With that in mind: What topics related to Educational Technology are you most interested in seeing me develop some training in for you? The focus of this community is Learning, Teaching, ans using Technology with Purpose - so AI is a big part of that, but not the "only" part of that. I have been teaching for a LONG time and have many tools in the toolkit on these topics. Feel free to suggest anything you might find useful to learn about to transform your skillset.

Hi @Frank Bergdoll ! I know how I worked with kids 1-on-1 or in very small groups, but I am interested in how to work with larger groups. I wonder how to satisfy a groups need to learn (other than Soctratic method). I am sure that there is more than one way, I would love to hear others. Thank You and Have a Wonderful Day! RayW...
