I'll be hosting a paid, four-week workshop next month where I'll walk you through designing and building your very own Milton! We're going to take your ideas and turn them into actual working devices, covering everything from selecting components and designing an enclosure to wiring electronics and getting everything running. I'm capping this first workshop at 15 members, so be there or be square! 📅 Next Intro Meeting: Thursday, October 29th, on Discord We'll go over the workshop, talk about project ideas, and answer questions before everyone starts ordering parts. Getting Started — Picking Your Components The first thing we're going to do is decide what we want our devices to actually do. For your first build, I'm going to limit everyone to 2–3 sensors and strongly recommend keeping things simple. You can always add more functionality later once you understand how everything works. Core Components These are the basic electronics we'll be building around: - 18650 Battery (1) — Rechargeable power source - TP4056 Charging Board (1) — Battery charging and protection (choose a protected version) - Boost Converter (1) — Provides the voltage needed to power the device - ESP32-S3 (1) — The brains of your Milton - TFT Screen (1) — Displays your readings and menus - Rotary encoder (1) - controls the display - Dupont Wires — For connecting and testing components We'll discuss specific component choices and compatibility during the workshop. Suggested Sensors Pick 2–3 that interest you. Remember, the goal isn't to cram as many features as possible into one device. It's to learn how everything works so you can expand it later! - BME280 — Temperature, humidity, and air pressure - Time-of-Flight Sensor — Measures distance using light - Microphone Module — Audio levels and sound waveforms - Accelerometer — Digital level, movement tracking, or fluid simulation - AMG8833 Thermal Sensor — Creates a basic 8×8 thermal image - Once you've got a better understanding of how components communicate using things like I2C, adding new sensors becomes a lot less intimidating.
