"What happens if the owner disappears tomorrow?" A business generating $300K in annual profit might look attractive. But what if the owner works 70 hours a week, manages every customer relationship, and makes every important decision? You might not be buying a business. You might be buying yourself a demanding job! Ask yourself these five questions: 1. Customers: Do customers buy from the company or because of their relationship with the owner? 2. Operations: Can the business operate for 30 days without the owner? 3. Employees: Is there someone capable of managing daily operations? 4. Financials: Would the business remain profitable after hiring someone to replace the owner's responsibilities? 5. Growth: Is the business dependent on the owner's personal network to generate new revenue? THE OPPORTUNITY An owner-dependent business is not necessarily a bad acquisition.In fact, it might create an opportunity to negotiate seller financing, a gradual transition, or an earnout.
