Avoid using "To Know" for everything in French!
Bonjour everyone! I hear this mistake a lot. In English, you use the verb "to know" for everything like people, facts, skills, and places. But in French, we have two different verbs, and mixing them up is a giveaway that you're translating directly from English. Let's fix that today with a very simple rule. Savoir = Facts & Skills Use savoir when you know how to do something, or when you know a specific piece of information. It's almost always followed by a verb (like faire, parler) or a connective word (like que, où, pourquoi). - Je sais nager. = I know how to swim. (A skill) - Tu sais où il habite ? = Do you know where he lives? (A fact) Connaître = People & Places Use connaître when you are familiar with a person, a place, or a thing. Think of it as "to be acquainted with." It is often followed directly by a noun. - Je connais Marie. = I know Marie. (A person) - Nous connaissons bien Paris. = We know Paris well. (A place) Why This Matters To sound like a native, you want to use connaître for familiarity and savoir for data. Getting these nuances right is what takes you from "textbook French" to sounding genuinely fluent and confident. We practice shifting between these two naturally in our live group classes, so if you want to get feedback and map this directly to your brain, make sure to drop into the next session! See you there! PS: In the meantime, write me 2 sentences in the comments below to practice! (One using savoir and one using connaître). I'll check your work!

Excellent travail ! Tu as parfaitement compris la règle. - « Je connais l'auteur de ce livre » : c'est absolument parfait ! - « Je sais cuisiner » : c'est la bonne utilisation de savoir pour une compétence. Attention juste à la petite faute de frappe sur cuisiner (il manque le premier « i ») ! Très bien joué ! On se voit à la prochaine session en direct

A one year old learner!
I asked the librarian ….”Is there a language section? I am looking for a book in french to help me improve my reading.”……. We were at the premiere étage (First floor). She said while pointing to a section…. “Umm….We only have grammar specific books, there.” …..Disappointed me picked a book that was heavy on grammar but still had something to read. Few moments later, I was at the ground floor browsing different sections. Suddenly I stumble upon a whole section of French language. It had stories. I picked the book named “Les 5 Souhaits de Rose” by Catherine Bourgault…... You know Why I picked this book?…. Well because I instantly understood the title. And….I went back to the librarian to inform her that there is a whole section carrying french story books. She smiled and said…..”Yes that is for kids”……..I replied, “I am a one year old french learner so I think I am eligible to get a book from that section”. We both burst into laughter breaking the one library rule which is to stay silent. 😂 But it was a happy ending. 😇

hahaha i love this! 😂 don't worry you're fully eligible for the kids' section 😂. It's actually one of the smartest ways to practice immersion. Start with Les 5 Souhaits de Rose! The fact that you instantly got the title means it’s the perfect starting line for you. We can save the heavy grammar book for our reviews later. Let me know how the first chapter goes! Thank you for sharing this post!!
Le Futur Simple : Le temps de la promesse… ou de l'illusion ?
Bonjour à tous et à toutes ! Have you ever noticed how the logic of French tenses changes depending on how real a plan is? Let’s look at a classic, subtle difference between two ways to talk about the future in French that completely changes the meaning. Le Futur Proche vs. Le Futur Simple In French, we have two main ways to express the future, and native speakers use them like a psychological tool: - Le Futur Proche (aller + infinitive): « Je vais faire mes devoirs. » (I am going to do my homework.) - Le Futur Simple: « Je ferai mes devoirs. » (I will do my homework.) If you want your French friends or colleagues to take your plans seriously, stick to the Futur Proche (Je vais...)! Votre petit défi de la semaine Don't worry about memorizing complex grammar conjugations today. Let's practice the realistic future! Write one sentence in the comments using « Je vais + verb » to tell me something you are actually going to do today (e.g., « Je vais boire un café » or « Je vais regarder une vidéo »). Si vous aimez décoder ces petites subtilités de la langue et que vous voulez progresser pas à pas avec confiance, mes cours en ligne et mon espace premium sont là pour vous accompagner, à votre rythme. À bientôt !
