Open or Closed
Ok time for next query. Closed, open and ( for me unknown until today ) half-open back. Talking about Studio (HP) headphones. I have always used closed back HPs. But recently one of my friends told me that U do have to use open back to hear the stereo information. I do not use headphones to hear that, I do use headphones to isolate what in a track i don't like (over and over on repeat). But it maybe sounds true for anyone only using HPs mixing, mastering. So whats your take on this topic, open or closed ? and for that matter on, in or over ?( for me the only alternative is over) and now to the reason for this post. I have some very comfortable AKGs, so comfortable that I forget to take the off when fetching coffee, making it time to switch. What is your favorit HPs model and brand? Best Regards P-G
Kontakt 8 in the modern studio
I started off my music journey with the free stuff that Native Instruments gave some 10+ years ago. I didn't buy the thousand+ dollar Komplete software back then, and after playing and getting nowhere I gave up and did other things. Now ive been making music for the past couple of years. I do own some Native Instruments software purchased, and even a S61 keyboard. But most of my music seems to come from other plugins from Arturia, SoundPaint, AAS, UVI I have looked at the deal with Native Instruments that will likely end real soon is quite good for Komplete15 as I have some of the apps. Funnily they give you a better discount for owning a cheap A series keyboard and nothing with the S. I look at what the Komplete offers and mostly it's a bunch of Kontakt libraries and some synths that I already own. ( like Massive and Massive X, FM8 ). so it seems rather pointless to buy that as I don't really need the sounds that come with Standard. Where I am more interested is with the one program that I don't have that seems to be a central part. Kontakt. I have the play version that works with a bunch of the free libraries and function. What does the FULL version bring to the table that would be worth while? The software regularly goes for $380cdn but if I can get a promotion for $99 it might be worthwhile if it does something worthwhile. I am interested in moving towards writing more symphonic music and adding orchestra sounds into my music. I know that to get serous I will need to purchase some of the better libraries that are out there. Most of them I think will run on play but I am not totally sure, I have heard there are lots of free libraries for Kontakt that require the full license but I don't know if that has really changed or if they are worth the cost of the software. Any help is appreciated.

I do have the Komplete Ultimate 14 (did not upgrade to 15. Found that do not use it as much as I used to do, might upgrade when I need something of the new stuff) I do have the NI S88 MK2 (use it every day). I do use the "Kontakt 8" and the "Komplete controller" almost every day (also use the Decent (Pianobook.co.uk(initiated of the creators of Spitfire )). I also have a yearly subscription on EastWest Composercloud+ (second year) , that I use for my current projekts ( 25 years celebration with one year subscription for 99$ (instead of 240$). Download and use all or any off their 42000 virtual instrument ) Check it out if it is something for U Best Regards P-G
Room acoustic measurement
What room acoustic measurement software are U using ? When creating my mixing environment and recording booth, I used REW, a free software with a pro upgrade. I am using the free version since i haven't found a need for the simultaneous measurement that the upgrade offers jet. I really do like this software but on the other hand I haven't used any other so....take a look and give me a hint on how U did ours. https://www.roomeqwizard.com/index.html and for the mixing room I also do have the IK multimedia ARC X. https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/arcx/ but I am using a speaker switch to easily switch between my speakers , and since I do not have their studio hardware(Arc x), switching corrections results for each flip between the speakers renders me to not use it all. Maybe U have a solution for that as well. Best Regards P-G

thanks for your insight! I am planning to upgrade and connect the "studio" after the switch i.e only in use for the studio monitors. I use three speaker system One home ( Audio pro T10), One studio ( HS 8), one Dolby Atmos system and finally a pair of headphones ( AKG K271 (will buy the ARC ON•EAR some day)) controlled with a external 4-way switch. Usually I add the Arc x plugin to sub-mix channels, but since I switch between home, studio, and ear say at least once every 30 sec and forget to switch active sub-mix channel and just adding to the confusion.
Impulse response
I do have a Godin ACS 2016 (to be used with my GR55), and it is a fantastic guitar to play, but the direct output piezo recorded sounds....not good (think that this is something common for all piezo) . To start with it I just slapped a reverb on it but was not satisfied. I then found out about IR files, and I have tested a bounce of files in my Logic Space Designer plugin (found one of a Gibson J-45 1943 Dazzo that I do like). But U can always do better. If U had this problem , tell me how U solved it. free IR file database ( say 200 IR files of different guitars) https://www.acousticir.ovh/rubrique3.html Best Regards P-G

Hi! I am P-G (like Woodhouse). My first guitar (EKO (a really shitty guitar)), I inherited from my sister early 70:ties (then 10 years old). It only had 2 remaining strings (5 and 6) but I still remember the first song I wrote ( I'am playing with the idea of doing something with it). I started as a Punk drummer 1977 and metamorfed into a Blues guitarist. Played in local blues bands to keep the dream alive until late 1986, when I quit my job, the band, and started my education. My guitars (still have them) were placed in the wardrobe, and there they remained untouched and unloved for 30 years. I retired (software consultant) myself summer 2017, due to the "ToDo list" of all those things U promised yourself to do. I picked up music again and it has been a marvellous ride. I do have a Studio, the only problem is that I share it with my wife. So it's a music, art and meditation studio, running on a tight schedule. I do not regard myself as an artist anymore rather as a writer and composer. I mostly write my lyrics in Swedish, but alternating with English....genre say SingSong with a touch of soul and blues. Today my biggest problem is that, I have entered the blackhole of "No Release" I start every day with the good intention of polish and finish some tune, but end up starting to write a new one just to NOT finish anything. Best Regards P-G
