@Sabrina Peter Ten years ago I learned about Flour and Sugar Addiction from Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson. Dr. D talks about addiction in terms of “excitotoxins” and food variety in 80/10/10, but Dr. Thompson dove deeper into the subject, frankly stating that “Flour and Sugar play upon the brain like Heroin and Cocaine.” Hit me like a ton of bricks because I had crashed and burned on high fat raw (Natural First Law) and low fat raw (811RV) over the course of two decades by then. My oldest brother was a Vietnam vet and an alcoholic (Sugar) and my mother and siblings, plus extended family had all struggled with obesity and related issues. This understanding helped me come to grips with my own yo-yo weight since I first started to pack on excess weight as a senior at university in Cajun Country, where I minored in Partying. Never acquired a taste for beer, though I was a Coke-aholic (soda, not snorting.) I went to Weight-Watchers the year after graduation and weighed in at 142 pounds. It took me two months or so to shed 20 pounds, which I maintained for close to 15 years through marriage to a competitive marathoner, and raising a family in the running community. I first went raw in 1998 while expecting my sixth child, but no one knew anyone to advise me on breastfeeding while raw. Ten years later I heard about Natalia Rose who had experience in this area, then was introduced to Doug, whose daughter Faychesca was a year older than my youngest, and Roz had experience to share (I was still nursing my toddler that summer.) I eventually received some bad advice from someone who conducted a body-building workshop at the WA retreat, and it proved to be my undoing. He was experimenting with Breatharianism. Live and learn. Fast forward to 2015 and I joined Susan Thompson’s Food Freedom Bootcamp at a whopping 170 pounds. It took me 9 months to get back to my ideal weight (shed 50 pounds and seven dress sizes.). Maintained that for six years until my teen got interested in advancing her culinary skills and needed someone to bolster her confidence before sharing her goods with coworkers. Her older sister was also eating no sugar, no flour, and her younger sister was picky about food. The rest had moved away with careers and families of their own.
