FYI - California signs law (SB 243) regulating AI companion chatbots
@Natasha Williams This post made me think of one of your recent posts. I say, good for California! This post came out on LinkedIn today by Conor Grennan. "Yesterday, California became the first state to sign into law a bill (SB 243) regulating AI companion chatbots, aimed at protecting minors from harmful content and manipulative behaviors online. I'm all for this. For me, I’ve been critical of regulation that slowed down the development of the tech itself - but this is different. If we could go back in time, we would have regulated social media to protect our youth. We have a second chance here. This goes into effect January 1, 2026. ++++ What the Law Does SB 243 requires chatbot operators to implement safeguards around interactions with AI chatbots, including preventing chatbots from exposing minors to sexual content, requiring notifications and reminders for minors that chatbots are AI-generated, and disclosure statements that companion chatbots may not be suitable for minor users. Specifically, the law: > Suicide prevention protocols: Requires operators to implement protocols for addressing suicidal ideation, suicide, or self-harm, including notifications that refer users to crisis service providers > Identity disclosure: Requires chatbot operators to issue a notification at the beginning of any companion chatbot interaction reminding users that the chatbot is artificially generated and not human, with the notification reappearing at least every three hours during ongoing interaction > Reporting requirements: Requires annual reporting on the connection between chatbot use and suicidal ideation to help get a more complete picture of how chatbots can impact users' mental health > Legal accountability: Provides families with a private right to pursue legal actions against noncompliant and negligent developers +++++ Big Tech Companies Are Cooperating OpenAI praised SB 243's signing as a "meaningful move forward when it comes to AI safety standards.” They also recently began rolling out parental controls, content protections, and a self-harm detection system for kids using ChatGPT.
