I'm coming here from Learn Jazz Standards (dot com). The method taught there is the acronymn LIST and I use it more or less and actually have always used some parts of it because I'm primarily an ear learner who came to jazz from folk music, not classical. LIST is Listen (many times), Internalize (until it's 'in your head'), Sing (or hum, vocalize in some way), Transfer (to your instrument). At first, listen to the whole tune and do LIS, but in the Transfer process, I find I have to get down to the level of maybe two or four bars at a time, especially if it's a complex head, like a be-bop head.
