The Myth of the "Man Card"
I was out with friends the other night listening to a great local musician play covers of some of the best hits from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. The atmosphere was relaxed, the kind of evening where nostalgia mixes with laughter, good food and a few drinks. The conversation naturally shifted from the songs being played to the concerts we had attended in the past, and eventually to the β€œbucket list” acts we each wanted to see before they stopped touring. Names began to fly across the table: Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, AC/DC, Eminem, Jelly Roll, and dozens more. Then it was my turn. I’ve always like songwriters that tell a story so I casually mentioned that I’d like to catch P!nk someday. And that’s when it happened. The joke. The judgment. The reminder of an unwritten code. β€œCareful, we’ll have to take your man card.” It was meant as humour, but the message was unmistakable. Certain tastes, behaviours, or interests are apparently off-limits if you want to keep your membership in the club of traditional masculinity. Even in 2026, the spector of the β€œman card” looms large. THE BURDEN The concept of the β€œman card” is one of those cultural artifacts that you’d think we’d long buried, but it survives - mostly in jest, and it reflects something deeper: the policing of masculinity. At its core, the idea suggests that being a man is a fragile status, always at risk of being revoked if you stray from prescribed norms. If you admit to enjoying a female pop artist, showing too much emotion, or knowing your way around a laundry machine, you risk being called out. This pressure to conform is not harmless and it comes from all genders. It reduces manhood to a checklist of clichΓ©s: enjoy sports, drink beer, lift heavy things, remain stoic, avoid vulnerability, and never admit admiration for something coded as feminine. It teaches men that they must constantly perform to the ideal of a pre-dispositioned gender; type-casted into a role that discourages stepping outside of invisible boundaries for fear of ridicule or exclusion.

@Rositsa Aleksandrova careful what you wish for...
Hello there from over here
Hey everyone! I’m Patrick, a communications and creative guy from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. I work in communications, marketing, and digital media for a local mental health organization, where I get to wear way too many hats β€” from PR and social media to magazine editing, design, IT and whatever else needs doing. Outside of work, I’m a writer, photographer, home chef,Β cyclist, hiker, kayaker, and unapologetic Chicago Bears supporter. I’m always working on some kind of creative project, usually with far too many ideas and not nearly enough time. I’m here to learn, share, connect with interesting people, and be inspired along the way. Looking forward to getting to know everyone!
πŸ¦„ where in your life are you overcomplicating things? Cuz of self sabotage?
I used to do it a lot!!! Everywhere! And then noticed it and shined the light on it. Then you cannot unsee it…. Then I began a journey of discovering more and more. Where else am I going that and shooting myself im the foot?? The more we look for somethings the more things we find…. Then I noticed it in others… and pointing it out when welcomed…. It’s like a fckn virus!!!! It’s everywhere!!! I overcomplicated my whole life!!! My artist name (Al3xAndrovA… MsRositsa…. Why can’t I just use my name??), my business (Opulence, V1B1N, Alexandrova Skool of Music, Vacay Getaway, Al3xAndrovA the Great, Success Consulting, YogAl3, Zen Design Center - why can’t we just not combine??), my music (too much classical in an EDM track), my relationships (interpreting and reading too much into it and making lame excuses for hard evidence that i simply made a wrong choice w a giant POS), my socials (each one of the businesses had its own socials, YouTube etc)…. My offers in the past…. (Long a$$ confusing post / email w too many words and just tiring to look at, let alone to read and comprehend….)…… dang And the list goes on 🀯 Share yours…. And here is no shame in it, just working through it…. Cuz I see YOU! And I no longer slap my unsolicited opinion but I still want to be helpful…. I see it in your offers, your about pages, your excuses, even community name…. So let’s work through, shall we??

I think I sometimes over-complicate the difference between being known and being understood. So I lean into maintaining my anonymity with artistic projects that require giving up a piece of myself to make them become whole. This usually results in an excessive amount of thought about what I reveal, what I keep to myself, and how things might be interpreted...including the identity I allow to become associated with the work. It's never that I question the importance of a piece...but rather whether the world will think that it β€” and by extension, I β€” am worthy to be seen. Maybe the simpler answer is that not everything needs to be explained to have meaning... But I'm not there yet.
🌸 question for ALL TRIBERS! What makes a real good master chef different than all reg chefs??
I posted this question to look for the answer in both @Jenny Rader-Bakos’s and @Andrew Brooks’s communities! Cuz both are true real deal type of chefs…. And no one guessed!! Even all the chefs!!! In both chef’s communities!! 🀯 It’s a proof of my experiment - we all overcomplicate absolutely everything!! Even the simplest things! Like it’s literary in our faces slapped!!! We got so many answers already and even @Chanie Twersky chat GPTed the question and still nothing!!!! Please, someone guess already!! Otherwise I might have to spill the beans at tomorrow’s Tribe Fiesta call! Any guesses??????
