Today, I want to share a reality check.
After 11 years of dedication, hard work, relationships, and memories. I was laid off in 5 minutes. What made it even more disheartening wasn’t just losing the job. It was how quickly everything ended. No real goodbye. No moment to acknowledge the people I spent more waking hours with than my own family. Just… done. Somewhere along the way, especially with remote and hybrid work, we’ve lost small but meaningful human moments, closure, appreciation, and the simple act of saying goodbye. Workplaces used to hold core values around connection and respect. Even when someone moved on, there was a handshake, a conversation, or a farewell gathering. Today, many people disappear from teams overnight without the chance to thank colleagues or be thanked. I believe we can do better. Whether we work remotely, hybrid, or in the office, maybe we can start advocating for small changes like allowing employees a proper goodbye, even if it’s just a short Zoom meeting. These moments matter. They honor people, relationships, and shared time. In Ubuntu, we believe “I am because we are.” We’re in this together. Do you think encouraging organizations to create space for meaningful goodbyes could help bring back some humanity into the workplace?

@Christopher Mcinga I would've liked that to be the case. But unfortunately thats not the reality for remote workers. Based on my experience, their was no time to say goodbye or even send emails afterwards of how grateful you are to everyone over the years. My access got blocked after the bug lay off calls. I also get it but just felt a little stung by it. Return the equipment as soon as possible and sign the release agreement send to my personal email on file. That's that!
