I'm back, and here's the honest version
I owe you some honesty, and it happens to be the very thing this community exists for. I started ChangeEight to walk with people through the messy, non-financial side of a big life change. And then life handed me one of my own to deal with. Something came up that I needed to tend to, and for a stretch there I went quiet. I thought about this place often, and I felt the pull to come in here and apologize for the silence. But here's what I keep teaching, so I had better live it too. Progress in this season of life is not a straight line. You move forward, then something knocks you sideways, then you find your footing and move again. Slipping back for a while does not erase the road you have already walked. Research actually bears this out: people who step back rarely land all the way at the beginning. It is just how real change works. So I am not going to beat myself up over it, and if you have ever fallen off your own good intentions, I would gently ask you not to either. We just take the next small step. This is mine. I am here, and I am starting again today. Going forward, you can expect me in here regularly, sharing one honest, practical idea at a time and working through the different parts of a whole life in retirement, one piece at a time. Nothing overwhelming. Small and steady, the same way the real work gets done. And here is my one small ask of you, because a community only comes alive when more than one voice is in the room. Drop a comment below and tell me just one thing: where are you in your own transition right now? Still a few years out, freshly retired, or a while in and still finding your footing? You do not have to write much. One honest line is plenty, and I will answer every single one. Glad to be back. Let's pick the path back up together. Retire Well. Live Fully. Matt

Even though I thought I retired in mid 2024, I ended up taking a part/time gig in 2025 which ended last March. I'm finding that retirement is something I need to figure out a day at a time, but as time passes I'm feeling more comfortable. As we've discussed, I try to have at least two planned activities each day, with other people whenever possible.
Getting back in the swing of things!
Hey everyone. Happy belated 4th of July, I hope you got some good time with family or friends. I owe you an update and an apology. I had an unexpected hospital stay these last couple of weeks, and it knocked me off the usual posting routine here. I'm doing okay now and getting back on my feet. The Resources & Tools classroom kept moving while I was out. There are new videos up, and I added a fresh research summary you'll find there now if you want something to dig into in the meantime. Regular community posts and discussions pick back up next week. Thank you for your patience, and for being part of this in the first place. It matters more than you probably know. What's one thing that's been on your mind about your own retirement transition lately? Would love to hear where everyone's at.

Here's a new resource I just found out about today - https://nextyearsbestyears.com/
Weekend Check-In — One Good Thing
Happy Saturday, everyone. Mondays here are for looking ahead. I want the weekend one to be for looking back, gently. No pressure, no big report. So here's the only question: what's one good thing from your week? It can be small. A walk you took. A call with an old friend. A quiet morning with your coffee. Something you read that stuck with you. Across the eight dimensions, progress almost never looks like a transformation. It looks like one small, real thing. I'll go first: I have had 3 meetings this week with people who gave me feedback about ChangeEight and the Evidence Brief explaining ChangeEight was started because of the feedback for those meet ups. Check out the free resources including the Brief in the Resources and Tools Classroom. Share your 'small thing' below, even just a few words. Honestly, reading these is one of my favorite parts of the week.

Yesterday at a boardwalk fair where I live in Long Beach, I again met the principals of 'Gratitude for Life,' an online clothing store created in the memory of a 16 year old who died 10 years ago. Their focus on staying grateful, even now while dealing with the illness of another family member, is remarkable.
