Why I cancelled three AI tools this month
I pay for a lot of AI tools. This month I cancelled three of them because free tools on my laptop now do the same job. The only ones I kept do something I can't do on my own, like send email at scale. If a free tool can do what your product does, your price doesn't matter much. Curious if anyone here has seen this in their own numbers. Resource to find open source alternatives to paid subscriptions. Hope this helps! https://openalternative.co/alternatives?q=Granola&fbclid=PARlRTSAUNfK1wZG9mAmZkaWQWUOAdNkoDAUqdN2qMX_sX1ut2btn912V4dG4DYWVtAjEwAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkDzEyNDAyNDU3NDI4NzQxNAABp-An6IDuypAnbhWXg32094nzfB1UcHEqDVXkYLDraG1eBBjh0d0KvDxrB3Ar_aem_sdu4wCnJtY0Usx_ozMBrBg
Same API call, three different prices
I'm on the buying end of these AI APIs, not the pricing side, so tell me if this is just normal. I stopped eyeballing my account balance and reconciled an actual batch of video generation jobs. Same model, same settings, three different prices: - my own price table: $0.17/sec - the vendor's pricing page: $0.34/sec - the cost field on the job response itself: $0.374/sec So even the vendor's published rate came in under what the API actually charged me. A clip I budgeted at $1.02 billed at $2.24. Best guess is a surcharge for the resolution I picked, but nothing said so when I submitted the job. The other thing that surprised me: it bills at submit, not at delivery. Every retry and every clip I throw away still costs full price. For people who do this for a living, do published rates get used for anything past a rough sanity check, or is measuring your real cost first just assumed at this point?

Bending Spoons acquires Miro - reflection of AI monetization strategy?
Interesting news. Bending Spoons acquires Miro for about $1.35B at a roughly 2.25x multiple. From the outside looking in, I thought Miro had a pretty solid AI monetization strategy bundling AI credits in their self-serve plans and allowing people to buy more when they ran out. Maybe the strategy was sound but the execution missed? Anyone have thoughts? My head is thinking if their AI revenue was clicking Miro should have gotten a better deal?

Bundled credits put COGS inside the plan. Heavy users cost real money every month, light users cover them, and gross margin slides even while AI revenue climbs. Margin is what the multiple gets set against, so strong AI numbers and a soft price can sit together fine. Plus Bending Spoons is underwriting price tolerance, and they'll take the churn to get it. Rob's Evernote numbers back out exactly: 0.52 of the users times 2.5x ARPU is the whole 30%. Does anyone know how Miro priced the credit packs? Whether the overage came off inference cost or off the seat price would tell you a lot.
Costing Agentic Workflows
I'd like to hear about people's experience of running tests on agentic workflows for the purpose of observing cost per flow and variables that drive cost. Which observation layers have you used? How have you run tests? What sort of sample size is needed to lock down a distribution with suitable confidence level? How much variance did you then bake into cost models for execution?

I build these workflows rather than price them, so this is just one small run. Last week I tracked every job in a 6-job pipeline. The price list was wrong on every endpoint I checked, and always in the same direction. One page said $0.34 a second and charged me $0.374. Another said $0.08 and charged $0.15, nearly double. So if your cost model starts from the vendor's price list, it starts from a wrong number. The fix was simple. Ignore your account balance, it tells you nothing, especially on a shared account. Most of these APIs give you the real cost of the job in the response when you submit it. Save that number next to the job ID. That was the only figure that ever added up. One more thing worth knowing. You're charged when you submit, not when the job finishes. Cancel a job or retry one that timed out, and you've paid for both. No idea on sample size, 6 jobs is far too few. For scale, I expected $7.92 and was billed $8.71.
