It is me, Hi, I'm the problem it's me haha
Some more quick (I think) questions. Coming from a place of I don't want to set her up for failure or lock in bad habits... (4 month old German shepherd) When she is doing something she shouldn't, prime example at the moment is going into the kitchen, we have been alternating between 'ah' and 'out'. Now I know alternating is not great but trying to establish is it always just 'ah' when doing something 'wrong'? We are working on lead training and just also getting her out and about to get used to people, noises, runners, bikes, cars, buses etc. When she is taken out for a walk to just sniff and get used to all of the above, she isn't being 'lead trained' so if she pulls, stops, walks in front etc we let her. I feel like this is wrong and setting her up to fail. Question: Do you do the lead training work first so that when she is out and about she is on doing as required on the lead or it won't do any harm to have occasions where she is like that and I need to loosen up? Thanks in advance and I hope you have all had a lovely weekend.

Cool ok. Thank you. We use drop for that when she has something in her mouth we don't want her to have so out should work for the kitchen and so we just need to get consistent with that and not use ah and out interchangeably. Am I right to think over time if she gets told out enough she will just stop going in there? That makes sense. We couldn't even get her to walk on the leash at all originally, she would just flop down and lay. So we started taking her outside (it has only been 4 times) for walks and just got her used to the leash that way. So at least now she will walk on the leash. I definitely don't want sniffing on walks long term, once she is old enough I plan on running with her so definitely no sniffing! No one has showed me. I know about the back and forths from a friend (haven't done it yet but I will start tomorrow) and door manners I saw a video in the classroom section I think it was so have been using that for the door manners. :)

@Lex Stephens overthinking is my skill! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣. Thanks! No I’m Qld based. I have a friend who is on her fourth GSD who is going to check on what I’m doing and how I’m doing it to make sure I’m on the right track. She thinks I’m just overthinking it all but is going to check for me so I in theory stop overthinking it.
A couple of related(?) questions please Walkys Community!
I have a beautiful 4 month old German shepherd puppy. We’ve had her for 2.5 weeks. I am not expecting miracles and just wanting to work through some basics. Seeking guidance/tips/hints - please - on a couple of things and I am finding Google a bit conflicting and down rabbit holes. 1. When training how do you get her to keep your attention on you? 2. How do you teach her her name? I admittedly think she knows and at times will come when called by her name and other times won’t and whilst I know this needs to be taught and takes time I’m not sure if she’s coming just because or if she actually recognises her name. 3. Is it ok to teach her two names? So name and nickname? 4. Food training. I hear conflicting things about this. Is it recommended? I have been working with her just with lots of praise and it seems to be working with things like on your bed and sit but struggling with other things so wondering if food training might be ‘better’. A massive thank you in advance if you have read this far!

@Lex Stephens no I hadn’t. I had friends with them and police dog handlers but never my own. Other dogs growing up but I’ve always wanted a shepherd and here we are! Just navigating the world of when to train what! 🤣. Worth it though.
