Reception is awkward
When you go to basic training, you don’t just go and immediately start training. You go to reception first where they start all the fun stuff to get you set up in your branch. This is where you will get you uniforms, do all of your finance paperwork, and the lovely assembly line of shots. You will stand in line and wait for hours. This is also an introduction to what hurry up and wait is. Get used to it, it will be part of your routine for a while. Have you heard any stories about reception?

No stories in particular but it’s a moment you never forget! It was a lot all at once, but then you have an overwhelming sense of pride, and oh shit I get to put on the actual uniform now! It was cool. Long, but yes very hurry up and wait-ish!

@Izak Gillette you say your main problem is discipline? At least you are able to acknowledge that it needs work. Is it discipline for authority, or just listening when asked or told to do something?
What is your why?
What is the reason you want to join? This is important for you to figure out because when times start to get tough this is what you need to go back to. Remember why you joined. Remember what you told yourself when you signed that piece of paper and raised your right hand. I’ve had many times when I had to remind myself why I was putting myself through the hard things.

What about you Zachary?

@Zachary Holder I think that’s great. A lot of want our kids to ultimately make the best decisions for themselves. My kids joke about wanting to join because of me, but when it comes down to it they have to make their own decision for them, and what they think will help them. I can only guide them and let them k ow my experiences!
Holidays
Military gets all federal holidays off. What does that mean for you? That means you will get a little more down time than many of your friends who are working for a normal 9-5 corporation. The caveat to that is the military gets their time back out if you. If you are deployed or preparing for a mission, you work no matter what day it is. Enjoy the days you do get off and understand that when the word comes, you will need to put in those extra hours. What holiday would you most likely travel back home during once you get in?

I definitely think Christmas is the holiday people should travel home, but me being in Europe sometimes it makes more sense for people to come and visit me, especially if they are only one person!
Test yourself
What have you done to test yourself physically? Are you an athlete? Have you ran any organized races or trained for any competitions? If you have, then you will understand that you must start slow and build. Not many people can jump right into a competition and do well or avoid injury. Basic training is the same way. You need to be physically prepared before going into basic. They do not have time to give you the foundation of physical fitness. You will be expected to have a certain level of fitness. This is why they give you that preliminary PT test to see where you stand. Why not go basic training in the best shape you can to ensure your success. It will also make basic a little easier on you as well.

I think for me, a nice little challenge would be completing the Norwegian ruck march. Since I am in Belgium, various countries host it and we are invited.. I volunteer to help, but never participate. I think the fear of falling behind or not being as fast as everyone else messes with me. I commonly hold myself back. I’d love to get into rucking long distances timed.
