Voices Are Overrated
Hey guys, I'm doing a thing I haven't done in a loonnnnggg time and releasing a full album. I've been doing singles for so long and just recently had a perspective shift in my own listening habits away from playlists and back to the joy of hearing a band's story from start to finish. I even went out and got a freaking record player again. I never thought I'd do that, but I miss the whole experience. So, that said, I decided to do my own music in the same format and I'm dropping an instrumental album later this year. The title track was actually the last one I finished and I'm sharing it with ya'll here, well in advance of the actual release date. =] Oh and I did an experimental thing with this and didn't repeat a single sectoon of the song!

All instrumental music is a tricky business. It's definitely harder to connect with the average listener than a song with vocals. I feel like musicians are definitely more open to it than average listeners. Even as a musician/guitar player...it takes a special song to REALLY grab me. Even guys like Satch, Vai, and the like...I don't really enjoy listening to one of their albums front to back. Props for giving it a go!
Why does my guitar recording sound like a**
Hello, I'm new here. My guitar recordings sound like trash. I'm motivated to make that a thing of the past. Thanks for the invite!

Yes, as Mark said, more details about your current process might help with suggestions because there are a TON of things that can make a recording sound bad...some super simple to fix, others a little trickier...but definitely doable.
SSL 4000 vs SSL 9000 Shootout
Hey guys, as you've seen in the lessons and in my numerous mix videos, I use the SSL EV2 plugin by waves CONSTANTLY. @Nic Svensson posted about another SSL channel strip which is based on the newer 9000 console series and is produced by Solid State Logic themselves. I am putting a shootout video on my YouTube channel for it on Monday, but I'm posting it here for ya'll first so you can see how they compare. I ended up opting for the monthly subscription to their whole plugin suite because there is so much great stuff in there. I think you could get every plugin you could ever need for less than $20 a month with it. I'm going to approach them about offering members here a discount. Cross your fingers!

Yeah, that is an actual audible difference. I never shot them out back to back like that. Now I'm curious if the 4000 series plugin from SSL has any noticeable differences from the Waves one.
Your DAW of choice
So in the vein of trying to help out those getting into recording...one of the first questions that most people have is "Which DAW should I use?" Mainly for the more experienced guys to give the newer people some insight...what DAW are you using, and more importantly, WHY?

@Craig Dingwall Reaper is great bang for your buck. Ableton on the other hand...I'm not a fan of it as a DAW (though some people use it as such). Where I think it shines is in a live scenario. I use it to automate my band's shows, playing backing tracks, sending midi program changes to my gear, running video...you can even use it to program lighting.

@Craig Dingwall 100% When I was using Reaper, Kenny's videos came to my rescue plenty of times.
What Are You Working On Now?
Hey guys, I'd love to hear what music project you are currently working on? An individual song or thinking of a whole album? Is it music for something else like to go with a movie? What's currently in your DAW getting tweaked and recorded? For me, I always have a few things in progress at once. I;m just going into pre-production with my Answer infinity band on our next full length. I'm finishing writing, "Inspire" which is a tune featuring one of my endorsements. And, lastly, I'm working on a mini song for my upcoming YT lessons on the top 5 habits of Jimi Hendrix.

Drum tracking for my band's first full length album begins next week in Budapest. I should have the raw tracks in about 2-3 weeks to start tracking the rest of the instruments.
