Why Most Players Don’t Improve (And What We Can Do About It)
One thing I’ve been noticing more and more—especially at the youth level—is that a lot of players are putting in time… but not actually getting better. And honestly, it’s not always their fault. A lot of training focuses on doing drills instead of teaching the ā€œwhyā€ behind the drill. For example:A player can go through cone drills for 20 minutes… but if they don’t understand: - When to use that move in a game - What defender they’re reading - What reaction they’re trying to create …then it becomes memorization, not development. So this week I’ve been shifting my approach to 3 things: 1. Every drill must answer a game situationInstead of saying ā€œwe’re doing crossovers,ā€ I frame it like:šŸ‘‰ ā€œYou’re attacking a defender who’s cutting you off—how do you create space?ā€ 2. Add decision-making into everythingEven simple drills become live reads: - Coach points left/right → player reacts - Defender shades one side → player counters - No predetermined moves Because basketball isn’t scripted. 3. Slow it down before speeding it upA lot of players rush through reps trying to look ā€œgame speed,ā€ but don’t even understand the movement.I’d rather: - Break it down - Build control - THEN increase pace What I’ve noticed:When players understand the why, their confidence goes up immediately—and that’s when you start seeing real improvement translate into games. Question for the coaches/trainers :What’s one drill you currently use—and how do you make sure it actually translates to real game situations? Or if you don’t—how would you adjust it to make it more game-realistic?

@Mike Moran Close out shooting drills is one of the best game speed drills to do so you adding the decision making to it only makes it a waaay better drilll šŸ‘šŸ½ good stuff coach !
WHAT WOULD YOU DO ā‰ļø
You are running a successful business at the current gym you are at. The rent is getting expensive and you have limited hours. You need more hours for your trainers in order to increase revenue. Would you:

@Daniel Cooper it’s not going down like that Boston is about to make history once again with all the odds stacked against us. They said this was supposed to be a gap year for us šŸ˜…

DISCUSSION 🚨 Are we training players… or just entertaining them?
Now i want everybody to really take a second & Be honest with yourself… Yes A lot of sessions LOOK good: - Fancy cone drills - Crazy combo moves - Nonstop movement …but how much of that actually shows up & translates in a real game? I’ve been thinking about this heavy lately. There’s a difference between: Players leaving a session tired vs Players leaving a session actually BETTER So here is my real question: How do YOU make sure your workouts translate to real game situations? Is it: - Small-sided games? - Constraints? - Live reads? - Film work? - Something else? Or do you feel like most trainers (be honest) are just running workouts that look good on camera? šŸ‘‡ Drop your thoughts — and if you disagree with something in here, even better… let’s talk about it.

I’ll kick start it. For me, I’ve been moving away from over-complicated drills and focusing more on live situations where players have to actually make decisions. That’s where I’ve seen the biggest improvement.
