Trying something different from the last take..and my goal of posting weekly...well..haha, life and summer, but I'm still here working on it. I found a version of this song by Bireli Lagrene (why haven't I listened to him more?) that I really liked and stole a bunch of ideas from him. Anyway, feedback always welcomed.

Part 4 in learning the tune - playing scales and improvising with higher rhythmic variety. This was a quick take with a few flubs in the scale portion and I missed a couple of changes in the improv - but this is my practice. I do play the whole exercise (attached) slowly and review the problem areas. In today's practice, I did that 3-4 times before recording - this is my third take. Tempo is slow at 75 bpm which allows me to play 16ths for the scales. I may let the backing track play and go back and forth between playing the scales and improvising - but this is helpful in hearing ahead.

Just wanted to post my result of chapter 4. I decided to play a minimal voicing after the approach notes to visually link the single lines to the chord shape. In my effort to "show the work" plus post something every week, this is part 3 of learning Someone to Watch Over Me. I've posted a chord melody, guide tones + chromatics, this is Arpeggios + an attempt at Ligon licks / third targeting. I am also working on scales and comping for this tune. Part of the goal is to get the changes in my head and under my fingers. For this tune, there are a lot of passing diminished chords, lasting only 2 beats, so a lot of changes that can be tricky to keep in my head. There are plenty of mistakes here - but this is my typical practice routine - the first 1:30 are straight arpeggios up and down the neck for a complete run through of the song. The second round (roughly 1:30) is the targeting of thirds. Then I would typically improvise. Hopefully that is improving as I really learn the song. I include a minute of the improv so not to bore you any more - I admit this is not an exciting post! If it goes well, I finish in about 10 minutes.
