8 contributions to Lessons in Self Publishing
Self-Publishing Is Not the Easy Way Out
It’s the brave way in. You become the writer, marketer, strategist, and visionary all at once. It stretches you. It exposes you. It sharpens you. But it also gives you ownership. What’s the biggest lesson self-publishing has taught you so far? Or the lesson you ought to have know before now?
Uploading a Paperback to KDP - Full Process
I screen recorded the process of uploading a simple paperback to KDP (edited down to 13 minutes). This was for a poetry book written by Astronaut Dr. Sian Proctor. We filmed this to share at a "how to publish your book" workshop at the Analog Astronaut Conference (AAC) held each May at Biosphere II in Arizona.

Thanks for this helpful substance.
Beyond Just Publishing
Publishing a book is only part of the journey. Understanding your audience, refining your presentation, and learning how to position your work well are just as important. Every lesson learned builds stronger results. What is one publishing lesson you've learnt and wish you knew earlier?
Writers, let’s talk about revision for a moment.
When you reach the editing stage, what part tends to slow you down the most? Is it cutting words you worked hard to write? Strengthening dialogue so it sounds natural? Fixing pacing that feels slightly off? Cleaning up grammar and sentence flow? Or restructuring sections that just are not landing the way you hoped? Revision can be one of the most rewarding stages, but it can also be the most frustrating. I have noticed that many writers struggle most with clarity and flow during self edits, especially when they are too close to the work. What part of revision feels the most overwhelming to you right now? And when you get stuck, do you push through it alone, step away for a while, or seek outside feedback? I would genuinely love to hear how you approach this stage of the writing process.

@Indy M I hear you! Editing can definitely feel like the most challenging part. It’s where the work really gets refined, but it can also be the most frustrating. Taking a step back to reset and calm your mind is such a smart approach. Often, a fresh perspective is exactly what your writing needs to find the right words and flow. How do you usually decide what to cut or keep when you return to it?

@Danielle Marietta Wow, that sounds like such a meaningful process! It’s amazing how stepping away gives you fresh perspective. Refocusing on your characters over the plot will definitely make the story feel more alive and authentic. Excited for you to see it all come together!
Turning Manuscripts into Masterpieces
Self-publishing is empowering, but it requires strategy. Writing the book is just one part. Editing, formatting, cover design, and marketing all matter. Many writers underestimate the power of clarity and professional editing before publishing. A great idea deserves a great presentation. If you have self-published or plan to, what part of the process feels the most overwhelming right now?
